Why the weight varies so much
Not all snow weighs the same, and this is the single most useful thing to understand.
Light, dry powder - the fluffy stuff from a cold clear front - is mostly air. You can have a foot of it and be carrying a modest load. Wet, heavy snow - the dense stuff that falls near freezing, the kind that is a workout to shovel - can weigh several times as much per inch. Then it rains on top of it, the snowpack absorbs the water, and the load climbs again.
That is why "how many inches is too many?" has no honest answer. A homeowner with three feet of powder may be fine. A homeowner with ten inches of saturated slush after a February rain-on-snow event may be carrying more weight.
Roofs in Wisconsin are designed and permitted with ground snow load in mind for their location, so a modern, correctly framed house has real margin. The risk lives in the exceptions.
Which roofs actually deserve attention
Low-slope and flat roofs. Snow does not slide off. It accumulates, then absorbs meltwater and rain. Commercial buildings, porch roofs and additions with shallow pitch carry the most.
Wide, unsupported spans. Older barns, machine sheds, garages and open-plan additions with long spans and no interior bearing walls have less redundancy than a typical house roof.
Anywhere snow drifts or slides onto. This is the one people miss. Wind sculpts snow into deep drifts against dormers, valleys, and the low side of a roof step. A steep upper roof shedding onto a lower porch roof concentrates a whole roof's worth of snow onto a small structure. The average across your roof may be fine while one area carries triple.
Roofs with an existing problem. Rotted decking, a sagging ridge, previous water damage to rafters, or an under-built addition. Snow does not usually create a weakness; it finds one.
The warning signs that matter
Check these from inside and from the ground. Do not climb up to look.
- Doors or windows suddenly sticking on an upper floor, when they were fine in autumn - this can mean the frame is deflecting
- New cracks in interior drywall or plaster, especially above door frames or where walls meet ceilings
- A visibly sagging or wavy roofline - sight along the ridge from across the street
- Creaking, popping or cracking sounds from the structure under load
- Sagging ceilings or a bowed soffit
- Doors that pop open on their own
- Leaks appearing mid-thaw - usually ice dams rather than structure, but worth diagnosing
If you see structural signs - sticking doors, new cracks, a sagging line, sounds - leave the building and call someone. That combination is the one worth taking seriously immediately.
The bigger Wisconsin risk: ice dams, not collapse
In our experience the overwhelming majority of winter roof damage calls in Dane County are not weight problems. They are water problems.
Snow melts over the warm part of your roof, runs down to the cold overhang, refreezes into a dam, and water backs up under the shingles. That is what stains ceilings in February. It is caused by heat escaping into your attic, not by the depth of the snow - which is why the neighbour's roof can be bare while yours holds ice.

Please do not climb up there
This is the part we care about most.
Every winter, people are seriously hurt clearing roofs. Snow hides the edge. Ice forms under it. Ladders slip on frozen ground. A metal rake near a service drop is a serious hazard. Roof falls send people to hospital, and the roof was usually fine.
If snow genuinely needs to come off:
- Use a roof rake from the ground, standing clear of what you pull down, and only reach the first few feet from the eave - that is the part that matters for ice dams anyway
- Never use a shovel, hammer, chisel or salt on shingles. You will destroy granules and void the warranty, and chipping at ice usually punctures something
- Never get on a snowy or icy roof. Not with a harness, not "just for a minute"
- Watch for the service drop and any overhead lines when raking
- Clear the exhaust vents - furnace and dryer vents blocked by drifted snow are a carbon monoxide risk, and that genuinely is urgent
For anything beyond ground-level raking, hire it out. It costs a fraction of an emergency room visit.
