What It IsSEC 01 / 07
A finished Buckshot residential roofing project

Real-shake looks, modern materials.

Synthetic and composite shakes are engineered polymer roofing tiles molded from real cedar shakes or natural slate, then color blended all the way through so chips and scratches don't show a different color underneath. Manufacturers like DaVinci, Brava, and Enviroshake build the category.

From the street, most people cannot tell it from real wood or stone. The difference is what it shrugs off: no rot, no insects, no moss, and far less maintenance than the natural materials it imitates.

"The cedar look, without spending the next 30 years maintaining cedar."
What We InstallSEC 02 / 07

Engineered for Wisconsin and Iowa weather.

The reason composite has taken off in storm country is performance. Most products carry a Class A fire rating, a Class 4 impact rating (the top tier for hail), and high wind ratings, often 110 to 130 mph, while staying light enough that your home needs no structural reinforcement.

We install the full system to manufacturer spec: ice and water shield, a quality underlayment, correct fastener and exposure pattern, and proper flashing and ventilation at every valley, wall, and penetration. The profile and color are chosen to fit your home, not a default.

Is It Right For YouSEC 03 / 07

The honest case for, and against, composite.

Composite is one of the best-performing roofs you can buy. It isn't the cheapest, and it isn't the right call for every home. Here's the straight version.

Why homeowners choose it

  • Cedar or slate looks without the rot, insects, moss, or constant upkeep.
  • Top-tier durability. Most products are Class A fire and Class 4 impact rated for hail.
  • Long warranties, often up to 50 years from the manufacturer.
  • Lightweight, so unlike real slate it usually needs no structural reinforcement.
  • Color-through material that resists fading and hides minor scuffs.

What to plan for

  • Higher upfront cost than asphalt, in the range of natural cedar or slate.
  • It's an imitation. Excellent from the street, but a purist may still prefer real wood or stone up close.
  • Profile and brand matter. Quality and warranty vary, so the product choice is part of the job.
  • Installer experience matters. Composite is detailed differently than asphalt; the crew has to know it.

Q.01What is synthetic or composite shake roofing?+
It's engineered polymer roofing molded from real cedar shakes or slate, with color blended through the material. It delivers the natural look while resisting rot, insects, and moss. Manufacturers like DaVinci, Brava, and Enviroshake make the category.
Q.02How long does a composite roof last?+
Most composite products carry long manufacturer warranties, often up to 50 years, and hold up extremely well thanks to UV-stable, color-through material with no rot or insect damage.
Q.03Is it more durable than real cedar?+
For weather and maintenance, generally yes. Many composite products are rated Class A for fire and Class 4 for impact (the top hail tier) with high wind ratings, and they don't need the cleaning and moss control real cedar does.
Q.04Does it really look like real wood or slate?+
From the street, most people can't tell the difference, because the tiles are molded from real shakes and stone. Up close, a purist may still prefer natural materials. We can show you profiles and colors during your estimate.
Q.05How does the cost compare?+
Composite is a premium roof, priced above asphalt and in the range of natural cedar or slate, but with far lower lifetime upkeep. The exact number depends on your roof, so we give you a written estimate after a free inspection.
Q.06Can it handle Wisconsin hail and wind?+
Yes. The Class 4 impact and high wind ratings on many composite products make them a strong fit for WI and IA storms. If you've had storm damage, we can also help with the claim. See storm damage →
