Very often, yes. The chimney is one of the most common leak points on any roof because the flashing there takes the most abuse. Water can travel before it shows inside, so we trace it to the real source during the free inspection.
We won’t sell you a caulk-only “fix.” Sealant over failed flashing buys a season at most and often traps water. The lasting fix is proper metal flashing set into the masonry, which is what we install.
Step flashing is woven into the shingles along the chimney sides. Counter flashing is set into the chimney’s mortar joints and laps over the step flashing. You need both; quick fixes usually skip the counter flashing.
