Drip edge flashing is the thin metal L-shaped strip along the edges of your roof that pushes water out into the gutter instead of letting it curl back behind it. That is the whole job. On a Madison home it costs almost nothing as part of a re-roof, Dane County inspectors expect it on a permitted asphalt shingle roof, and it is one of the first things a cheap crew leaves off or reuses.

If your fascia is soft, your soffit is stained, or there is a dark streak on the trim under your gutter, drip edge is the first place we look. Not the shingles.

What drip edge flashing does (and what it does not do)

Water does not fall off a roof in a clean arc. It clings.

Surface tension pulls the last of the runoff around the shingle edge and back along the underside. With no metal there to break that path, water touches the wood deck, runs down the face of the fascia, or slips into the gap between the fascia and the back of the gutter.

Drip edge stops that. The vertical leg hangs past the deck, the small kick at the bottom throws water clear, and gravity does the rest. It also stiffens a raw plywood or OSB roof edge and keeps wind-driven rain from working under the first shingle course.

Now the part most articles skip: drip edge does not prevent ice dams. Ice dams come from heat leaking out of your house, melting snowpack that refreezes at the cold eave. The cure is attic air sealing, insulation depth and balanced intake and exhaust ventilation, not edge metal.

What protects the deck when a dam does form is the eave ice barrier, the self-adhering ice-and-water shield membrane. Drip edge is the companion detail underneath it. The two work together, and neither one is a substitute for fixing a warm attic.

Does drip edge go over or under the underlayment?

Both, depending on where it is, and this is the detail crews get wrong. Eave drip edge goes under the underlayment. Rake drip edge goes over it.

Correct order at the eave (bottom up):

  1. Roof decking
  2. Eave drip edge, nailed high on the top flange
  3. Ice-and-water shield lapped over the drip edge flange
  4. Underlayment
  5. Starter course, then shingles

Correct order at the rake (bottom up):

  1. Roof decking
  2. Ice-and-water shield or underlayment
  3. Rake drip edge over the membrane, lapping the eave piece at the corner
  4. Starter, then shingles

Why the difference? At the eave, the membrane is your drainage plane. Water that gets under the shingles rides down that membrane and has to end up on the outside of the metal. If the membrane stops short and the drip edge sits on top of it, that water dumps onto bare decking and the fascia. At a rake, water runs down the slope rather than off the edge, so you want it staying on top of the metal all the way to the gutter.

Fasteners go high on the top flange every 8-10 inches, never through the exposed face, with a couple of inches of lap at seams so they cannot pump water. Get the eave sequence backwards and you have paid for ice-and-water shield that leaks. It is invisible once shingles are on, which is why we walk homeowners through it during an asphalt shingle roof replacement before the first bundle goes up.

Why a missing drip edge rots your fascia and soffit

Here is the failure sequence we see over and over on 20-year-old roofs around Madison.

  1. Water wicks behind the gutter and soaks the top edge of the fascia, the one edge nobody ever primes or paints.
  2. The fascia swells, paint blisters, and gutter spikes or hangers loosen because they are fastened into wet wood.
  3. The gutter tips outward. Now even more water misses it and runs behind.
  4. Moisture tracks into the soffit and the rafter tail ends. That is structural wood.
  5. Carpenter ants find the soft spot. Woodpeckers find the ants.

Most homeowners call at step 4 or 5: "the trim under my gutter is falling apart," or "there's a hole in my soffit." The shingles still look fine from the driveway. But now there is carpentry to do.

That is the part that stings. A few hundred dollars of edge metal skipped at install becomes fascia replacement, soffit patching, gutter re-hanging and paint.

Three Dane County roofs and what we found at the edge

1960s ranch, Madison west side. The previous crew ran the ice-and-water shield under the eave drip edge. At tear-off the decking was black for the first four inches across the entire front of the house. Replacing that strip of deck added about half a day and a few hundred dollars in sheathing, which is cheap compared to what another five winters would have done.

Two-story colonial, Sun Prairie. No rake drip edge at all, and the gable-end shingles just hung over bare wood. Water had been sheeting off the rake and behind the trim for years. The rot showed up exactly where it usually does, the corner where the rake meets the eave: soft fascia both directions, a stained soffit run, and two rafter tails that needed sistering. That carpentry ran well into four figures before we touched a shingle.

Re-roof do-over, east side. A homeowner brought us a bid from another company that read "reuse existing drip edge." She hired them. Six years later the ceiling in the back bedroom stained. The old metal had nail holes in the wrong places, and the new ice barrier had been tucked under it, so every heavy rain fed water onto the deck edge. Fixing it meant stripping the bottom courses and redoing the eave properly. She paid twice for one detail. Is drip edge required by code in Wisconsin?

The membrane has to run from the lowest roof edge to a point at least 24 inches inside the exterior wall line, measured horizontally. On low-slope roofs and long eave overhangs, that means more than one course of membrane.

This is the single most important companion detail to eave drip edge in southern Wisconsin, and it is the one line item we most often find missing or shorted on cheap bids. We install it as standard.

Older roofs are a different story

On roofs shingled before the mid-2000s around Madison, Monona and Sun Prairie, we regularly find no drip edge anywhere, especially on 1950s-1970s ranches and capes that have been re-shingled two or three times without anyone adding it.

How to check whether your roof has drip edge from the ground

No ladder needed for most of this.

  • Look at a gable end from off to the side. Under the shingle edge you should see a thin, straight metal line. Shingles hanging over bare wood mean no rake drip edge.
  • Look up under the eave at the gap between the back of the gutter and the roof edge. A flashlight often shows whether metal reaches into the gutter or you are looking at plywood.
  • Read the fascia. Peeling paint in a straight line along the top, dark staining, or a wavy gutter line all say water has been getting behind it.
  • Check the corners where the rake meets the eave. Rot almost always starts there.
  • Tap the fascia with a screwdriver handle if you can safely reach it. Solid wood knocks. Rotted wood thuds and gives.

Reusing old drip edge: the corner-cut to watch for in a bid

If a bid says the crew will "reuse existing drip edge," ask why.

Occasionally there is a real reason, like custom-color edge on a home with brand new gutters. Usually it is a shortcut. Old metal has nail holes in the wrong places, dents, chalked finish, and it was often installed in the wrong sequence to begin with. Leaving it means the new ice-and-water shield gets tucked under it instead of lapped over it, which defeats the point of both.

There is a warranty angle too. Manufacturer warranties cover manufacturing defects, not installation errors, and enhanced system warranties require a certified installer plus correct accessories and edge detailing. A reused, wrong-sequence roof edge is an easy reason for a claim to come back denied.

Other edge-metal red flags in an estimate:

  • Drip edge at eaves only, not rakes.
  • No line item for edge metal at all (assume it is not happening).
  • Ice-and-water shield with no mention of how it laps the drip edge, or no mention of the 24-inch ice barrier at all.
  • Aluminum so thin it oil-cans and ripples in the sun. We spec heavier stock, in the 0.019 inch range, on long straight runs.
  • "We'll just caulk the gap." Caulk is not flashing.

Shingle brand gets all the attention when homeowners compare estimates. Flashing decides whether the roof lasts. Full edge metal, correct layering, new pipe boots and new step flashing at walls are the difference between a 30-year roof and a 12-year roof wearing a 30-year label. Materials, profiles and colors

Most drip edge on Wisconsin homes is painted aluminum in 10-foot lengths, white and brown being stock, with custom colors available. Galvanized steel shows up with metal roofing. Copper is for historic work and costs many times more.

The profiles, using the names on real estimates:

  • Type C (L-style): the classic L with a small kick. Simple and common.
  • Type D (T-style): a return flange stands the metal off the fascia, throwing water further clear. Better performance, slightly more money.
  • Type F (gutter apron): long leg that reaches out over the gutter lip. Our usual pick at eaves when existing gutters are staying, because it puts water inside the trough even if the gutter has sagged.

Face sizes run 1.5 to 3 inches. A wider face covers the old paint line on tall fascia and looks cleaner from the street. Match the color to your gutters and trim, not your shingles.

What it costs, and why retrofitting later hurts

As part of a full roof replacement, drip edge is close to a rounding error. Installed, the metal typically runs a couple of dollars per linear foot, so a Madison ranch with roughly 180 feet of eave and rake is a few hundred dollars inside a much larger project. There is no good reason to skip it.

Retrofitting onto an existing roof is a different animal. Gutters come off and go back on, new metal has to work under a shingle course that has been baking for 15 years, and some shingles will crack.

If rot is already there, ballpark ranges (not quotes, since height, access and how far the rot traveled all move the number):

  • Fascia replacement: commonly $8-$20 per linear foot installed, including paint or prefinished aluminum wrap.
  • Soffit repair: similar per-foot range, more for vented aluminum or vinyl over a full run.
  • Rafter tail repair: priced per tail, and it is the item that moves a number the most. Nobody knows the count until the soffit is open.
  • Gutter detach and re-hang: usually a partial day. On 20-plus-year-old metal, new gutters are often the better buy.

Order of operations matters. Roof edge first, then carpentry, then gutters last into solid wood. Doing gutters first means paying to take them down twice. Fascia, soffit and gutters live on our siding and exterior trim side of the business, so one crew handles the whole edge instead of three companies pointing at each other.

One note before you call your insurer: rot and long-term water intrusion are almost always excluded as wear, deterioration or maintenance. Sudden storm damage is different. If wind peeled your edge metal or hail dented gutters and fascia, that belongs in a claim, and we meet your adjuster on-site so those line items make the scope. We will not sell you a claim that does not exist.

Failures we do see: the paint chalking and fading so it no longer matches new gutters, dents from ladders and ice sliding off, and galvanic corrosion where bare aluminum contacts pressure-treated fascia, copper, or the wrong fasteners. That is why edge metal gets stainless or hot-dipped galvanized nails, never plain steel through aluminum, and why aluminum should be isolated from treated wood.
Do gutter guards interfere with drip edge or gutter apron?
They can, and it matters if you just paid for leaf protection. Many surface-tension and screen-style guards slide under the first shingle course, the exact space the eave drip edge or gutter apron occupies, so the two have to be coordinated or the guard lifts the shingles and the metal gets bent. Tell us up front what guards you have. On most systems we can set a gutter apron behind the guard, reinstall the guard properly at the end, and keep the manufacturer's install requirements intact.
Can drip edge be retrofitted without replacing the whole roof?
Sometimes, and it is fussier than it sounds. Eave drip edge or a gutter apron can often be slipped under the first shingle course once the gutter is detached, if the shingles are still flexible. Rake drip edge is harder because it belongs under the shingle edge. On a brittle 18-year-old roof, forcing metal under shingles cracks them, so if replacement is a few years out, doing it right at tear-off is the smarter money.
