Short answer: on most Wisconsin homes, a continuous ridge vent beats box vents. It exhausts warm, moist air evenly along the entire peak instead of at two or three isolated spots, and even airflow is exactly what a Dane County winter demands.
Box vents (also called turtle vents) are not junk. They are the right tool on roofs with short, chopped-up, or hipped ridge lines where there is not enough peak to make a ridge vent work.
Here is how we walk homeowners through the decision, the math nobody shows you, and the one mistake that ruins either system.
Ridge vent vs box vent: the honest comparison
Both are exhaust vents. Their only job is to let hot, humid attic air escape at the highest point of the roof so cooler outside air gets pulled in low through the soffits.

One caveat on ridge length: a very short run cannot move enough air. Our shop rule of thumb is roughly 12-15 continuous feet before ridge vent earns its keep, but the printed instructions for the actual product govern. Common vents like GAF's Cobra line and Air Vent's ShingleVent II publish required slot width, end-plug details and run guidance in their installation sheets. Ask your contractor to hand you the data sheet for the vent on your estimate.
How much venting do you actually need?
Here is the number your contractor should be able to show you on paper.
The benchmark most inspectors and contractors in Wisconsin work from is IRC R806.2: a minimum net free ventilating area of 1/150 of the vented space. That drops to 1/300 if either of two conditions is met: 40 to 50 percent of the required area is provided by vents in the upper portion of the attic, at least 3 feet above the eave vents, with the balance at the eaves; or (in Climate Zones 6, 7 and 8) a Class I or II vapor retarder is installed on the warm-in-winter side of the ceiling. Madison and Dane County sit in Zone 6, so both routes are on the table, and a balanced ridge-plus-soffit system satisfies the first one on its face. Wisconsin's Uniform Dwelling Code (Wis. Admin. Code chs. SPS 320-325) is a state-written code with its own provisions, so confirm the exact requirement and your inspector's interpretation before the job.
"Net free area" (NFA) is the actual open airflow area after you subtract screen, louver and filter material. It is printed on every vent product, and it is always smaller than the hole in your roof.
Worked example, typical Madison ranch:
- Attic floor: 1,400 sq ft
- 1,400 / 300 = 4.7 sq ft total NFA = about 672 square inches
- Split it: ~336 sq in exhaust and ~336 sq in intake
- Ridge vent averages about 18 sq in NFA per linear foot, so 336 / 18 = about 19 linear feet of ridge vent
- Or box vents at 50-60 sq in each, so about 6 box vents
- Intake: continuous perforated soffit runs roughly 9-10 sq in NFA per foot, so you need 35-40 feet of open, unblocked soffit
Two things fall out of that math. First, most homes we open up have plenty of exhaust and nowhere near enough intake. Second, exhaust and intake should be equal, or intake slightly greater. Never the reverse.
The mistake that makes both systems useless: no intake
This is the most common venting failure we find in south-central Wisconsin. Exhaust without intake does not just fail to help. It makes things worse.
If the soffits are blocked, painted shut, or were never vented at all, a ridge vent cannot pull outside air in low. So it pulls the next easiest air it can find: conditioned air from your house, up through bath fan gaps, recessed lights, the attic hatch and wall top plates. Now you are exhausting furnace heat all winter and dumping indoor humidity into a cold attic.
That is how you get frost on the underside of the sheathing in January, rusty nail tips, matted insulation, and drywall stains in March when it all melts at once.
A 1962 ranch off Mineral Point Road is the picture-perfect version. Somebody had wrapped the eaves in solid aluminum soffit panels over the original vented wood, and a previous roofer had added ridge vent anyway. Frost on every nail tip, insulation gray and packed at the eaves, ice dam stains in the bedroom corner. The ridge vent was fine. It just had nothing to breathe.
What we typically find in attics around Madison, Sun Prairie and Middleton:
- Blown-in insulation shoved out over the top plate, burying the soffit vents
- No baffles (insulation chutes) at the eaves, so there is no channel from soffit to attic
- Solid aluminum soffit panels with no perforations
- Bath fans dumping straight into the attic instead of out through the roof or a wall
Fix intake first. Then argue about ridge vent vs box vent.
Never mix ridge and box vents on the same attic
If a ridge vent and box vents share one attic space, the box vents short-circuit the system.
Air takes the shortest path. Once the ridge vent starts pulling, it finds the box vents a few feet below and draws outside air in through them instead of all the way up from the soffits. The top two feet of attic gets a nice breeze. The rest of it, including the eaves where ice dams start, stops getting flushed.
Say it plainly: adding more exhaust vents does not add ventilation. Beyond the calculated amount, extra exhaust just gives the system more places to steal air from.
We see this on re-roofs where someone added ridge vent and left the old turtle vents because pulling them meant patching decking. That skipped patch costs the homeowner the whole benefit. When we install continuous ridge vent, the old boxes come out, the holes get decked, and underlayment goes down before shingles.
Gable louvers get blocked off from the inside for the same reason. A big gable vent sits well above the soffits, so a ridge vent will happily suck air straight through it and never touch the lower attic. Some homeowners have been told the opposite, and that advice made sense back when gable vents were the only exhaust the house had. Once you install continuous ridge vent, the gable becomes a leak in the intake path, not a help. The exception is two truly separate attic areas (a main attic plus a bonus room over the garage), which each get their own strategy.
Snow, wind-driven rain, whistling and Wisconsin winters
Blowing snow and driven rain. A quality baffled ridge vent has an external deflector that pushes wind up and over the slot, plus an internal weather filter behind it. That combination handles Wisconsin's horizontal February snow and August sideways rain. The old unbaffled rolled vents from the 80s and 90s do not, and those are the ones we find behind attic snow drifts and stained ceilings. A leaking ridge vent is almost always product age, a misplaced cap nail, or a missing end plug. It is not a flaw in the concept.
Whistling or noise. Ridge vents are usually the quietest option because there is no moving part and no large open louver. When one does whistle, it is normally a gap under the cap shingles, an incorrect slot width, or a big open gable vent creating a pressure imbalance across the attic. It is a workmanship symptom worth calling out, not something you live with.
Drifting on the peak. Snow on a ridge does temporarily cut airflow. That is normal, and it is not a reason to pick box vents, whose openings sit lower and closer to the snowpack.
Ice dams. Heat escaping into the attic melts snow mid-roof, water runs to the cold eave and refreezes. Even exhaust along the whole ridge plus real soffit intake keeps the deck cold and uniform. Spot exhaust from two box vents leaves warm pockets, and those pockets show up as icicle clusters every winter.
Ice barrier membrane. Ice-and-water membrane at the eaves is the partner to good venting, not a substitute. The benchmark most inspectors reference is membrane from the lowest roof edge to a point at least 24 inches inside the exterior wall line; on low-slope or problem eaves we go wider. Verify the requirement and interpretation with your Madison or Dane County building inspector, since the UDC provisions and local practice govern the permit.
Will bats, wasps or birds get in?
A correctly installed ridge vent should not become a doorway. The vent body carries an internal mesh or weather filter behind the slot, and both ends of the run get factory end plugs so there is no open channel into the attic.
Where wildlife actually gets in is the stuff nobody looks at: missing or broken end plugs, chewed and brittle old roll vent, unscreened gable louvers, rotted soffit panels, and gaps where a box vent flange lifted. Squirrels will widen a soft spot they find; wasps love an unfiltered slot.
If you already have bats in the attic, get them removed and excluded first (Wisconsin has timing restrictions on bat exclusion), then do the roof work. We will note any active entry point on the inspection report.
Summer: hot second floor and AC bills
Ventilation is not just a winter thing. A dark, poorly vented attic in July can run far hotter than the outside air, and that heat radiates down through the ceiling into your second floor while your AC fights it.
Balanced ridge and soffit venting keeps that attic temperature closer to ambient, which usually shows up as a more comfortable upstairs and less runtime on the condenser.
Now the honest caveat: venting is not a substitute for insulation and air sealing. If your attic has 6 inches of settled fiberglass and a leaky attic hatch, no amount of ridge vent will make the upstairs bedroom comfortable. Vent the roof, seal the ceiling, then insulate to depth. In that order.

Powered attic fans: usually the wrong answer here
Powered fans sound like an upgrade. In our climate they are usually a step backward.
- They pull hard enough to draw conditioned air out of your living space through ceiling gaps, so you pay to cool and heat air that leaves through the roof
- In winter they can push moist indoor air into the attic, the exact problem we are trying to prevent
- If intake is short, some units can backdraft a water heater or furnace flue
- Motor, thermostat and humidistat all eventually fail, usually silently
Solar versions are the same idea with a different power source. Passive ridge vent plus real soffit intake does the job with nothing to wire and nothing to break.

What a correct ridge vent installation looks like
Product choice matters less than workmanship.
The cut-back. The deck slot is cut back on each side of the ridge board per the manufacturer's spec, typically 1 to 1.5 inches per side for a 2 to 3 inch total opening. Too narrow and the vent cannot breathe. Too wide and you are into truss members and unsupported sheathing edges. We have opened "ventilated" ridges where the crew cut the shingles and never cut the decking at all. Zero airflow, full price.
Baffled vent, not bargain roll. External baffle plus internal weather filter.
Correct fasteners. Ridge cap nails must reach the deck through the vent and land in the marked nailing zone, not through the weather flange. Misplaced nails are a top cause of ridge vent leaks.
End plugs and terminations. Both ends get plugged, and hip and rake terminations get closed so wind cannot drive water or snow sideways under the cap.
Intake verified from inside. We check that soffits are open and baffles are in before anyone calls the job balanced.
How long does the job take, and what should you expect?
A retrofit ridge vent on a typical Madison ranch is usually a same-day job, often a few hours. Adding soffit intake or eave baffles can push it to a day or two.
You do not need to be home for the roof side of it. If baffles, air sealing or a bath fan reroute are part of the scope, we do need attic access, so we will schedule that with you, use drop cloths at the hatch, and keep the insulation disturbance to the eave bays we are working in. Expect some noise on the roof and a magnet sweep of the driveway and lawn before we leave.
What can you check yourself?
Plenty, without touching a saw. Cutting a ridge slot is not a DIY job (blade depth, truss members, cap shingle match, and one bad cut is a leak), but verifying the problem is fair game:
- From the ground: look up at your soffits. Are the panels perforated, or solid aluminum with no holes? Solid soffit means you have no intake, period.
- From the ground: count exhaust. Ridge vent, turtle vents, gable louvers, or some combination? If it is a combination, that is a conversation.
- In the attic on a cold morning, with a flashlight: frost or wet spots on the sheathing and nail tips, rust on nails, dark or matted insulation at the eaves, and daylight visible at the eave line. No daylight means blocked intake.
- In the attic: find your bath fan duct. If it ends in the attic instead of at a roof or wall cap, that alone can frost a whole ridge.
- Step only on joists or trusses, stay off the drywall, and if the attic is tight or the insulation looks disturbed by animals, stay out and let us look.
Ventilation and your shingle warranty
Fix venting during the re-roof, not after.
Shingle manufacturers, including GAF, require attic ventilation that meets code minimums as a condition of their material warranty. Inadequate ventilation is one of the standard exclusions cited when a manufacturer denies a premature-failure claim, right alongside improper fastening. Curled, blistered or prematurely brittle shingles over a hot, unvented deck are an argument you will lose.

What these fixes cost
At replacement time, the ridge vent versus box vent line item is small. On a typical Madison ranch or two-story it is a few hundred dollars either way, close enough that price should not pick your system. Airflow should.
The paired fixes are where real money shows up. Typical ranges in our market, and your written estimate is the real number:
- Cutting in soffit intake or swapping solid soffit for perforated: roughly $300-900
- Installing eave baffles: roughly $300-800 depending on bay count and attic access
- Air sealing attic penetrations and top plates: roughly $500-1,500
- Rerouting a bath fan out through the roof or wall: roughly $250-600 per fan
- Retrofit ridge vent on an existing roof: roughly $600-1,500 depending on ridge length and cap match
If those stack up, ask about payment options when we walk the estimate. We would rather phase the work in a sensible order (intake first) than have you skip the part that makes everything else work. And if someone quotes all five without going in your attic, get a second opinion.
Will insurance pay for any of this?
Usually not for the ventilation itself. Ice dam damage, attic condensation and rotted decking from poor venting get treated as maintenance, not sudden storm loss. Many Wisconsin policies do cover sudden interior water damage from an ice dam (the ceiling, not the cause), so read your policy and ask your agent.
Wind and hail are a different conversation. That is a real claim, and on storm damage work we meet your adjuster on-site to document it. We will not dress up a ventilation problem as a storm claim, and you should be wary of any contractor who offers to.
The bottom line for a Madison homeowner
Long, mostly uninterrupted ridge: continuous baffled ridge vent, with soffit intake confirmed and sized. Complicated hip roof, heavy dormers, or a short peak: correctly sized and placed box vents are the honest answer. Never both on one attic. Skip the powered fan. Run the numbers before anybody cuts a hole.
