Synthetic shake roofing is an engineered polymer shingle molded off real cedar shakes, so it reads as hand-split wood from the curb but behaves like a modern, high-performance roof. In Madison and the surrounding Dane County towns, budget roughly $12-$20 per square foot installed. On a typical 30-square house (about 3,000 square feet of roof surface), that is somewhere around $36,000-$60,000.
It is a premium product. For the right Madison house it is a very good buy. For plenty of others, the money is better spent elsewhere. Here is the honest version.
What synthetic shake roofing actually is
Composite shake, synthetic shake and polymer shake all mean the same thing: a molded shingle made from engineered polymers with UV inhibitors, fire retardants and mineral fillers blended in. The molds are pulled off real cedar shakes, so the grain and split lines are genuine wood texture rather than a repeating stamp.
What matters about the category:
- Thickness and shadow line. Butt thickness runs roughly 1/2 to 3/4 inch depending on the line. The thicker profiles throw the deep shadow that makes a roof look like real cedar. Thin, flat knockoffs give it away from the street.
- Class 4 impact rating. Class 4 is the highest rating in UL 2218. It means the shingle survived a 2-inch steel ball drop without cracking. It does not mean hail-proof.
- Class A fire rating on these products is an assembly rating, not a shingle rating. It is achieved with a specific fire-barrier underlayment named in the product's listing (a mineral fire-barrier sheet is the usual requirement). Skip that layer and you do not have a Class A roof, no matter what the brochure says.
- Color molded through the shingle instead of painted on, so a scuff does not reveal a different color underneath.
- Installs like a shingle on a solid deck, with standard nailing, ice-and-water shield at eaves and valleys, and conventional flashing.
DaVinci, Brava and CeDUR: how they differ
The three names you will hear are DaVinci Roofscapes, Brava Roof Tile and CeDUR, and they are not interchangeable.
- DaVinci is an injection-molded virgin-resin composite with the longest field history of the three and the widest palette of multi-width, multi-tone blends.
- Brava is a cast polymer tile using recycled material, known for hand-blended color that can be run through the thickness of the tile, plus shake, slate and Spanish-tile profiles.
- CeDUR is a different chemistry entirely: rigid polyurethane rather than a composite. It is noticeably lighter per square than the other two and mimics hand-split cedar texture very convincingly.
All three publish Class 4 impact and Class A assembly listings, but the required underlayment and fastening patterns differ, so the details are product-specific. Ask any contractor which specific line they are approved to install and for how long they have installed it. We will name ours out loud at the estimate, tell you which product we would put on your particular roof and why, and set physical samples on your own roof deck in your own daylight. These shingles photograph nothing like they look on a real Wisconsin roof at 4 p.m. in October.

Two footnotes on that table. "Lifetime limited" on asphalt is not 50 years of full coverage: it means full material coverage for a short initial period (often 10 years), then prorated value for as long as the original owner lives there, with one limited transfer. And on composite, the oldest roofs in the field are only about 20-25 years old. Forty to fifty years is an engineering expectation supported by accelerated weathering testing, not a proven track record. Anyone promising it is guaranteed to be your last roof is selling, not informing.
What moves your number:
- Pitch and access. A 12/12 with three dormers costs far more to install than a walkable 6/12.
- Tear-off layers. Two layers of asphalt, or old cedar over skip sheathing, adds labor and dumpster weight.
- Decking. Coming off cedar on 1x4 skip sheathing means a full plywood or OSB deck. Budget for it.
- Details. Valleys, chimneys, skylights, sidewall step flashing and dead valleys all add labor and metal.
- Ventilation corrections. Blocked soffits and undersized ridge venting are extremely common here, and fixing them protects the warranty.
Financing, permits and paperwork
Nobody writes a $45,000 check without thinking about it. We work with third-party lenders, and the structures typically available are unsecured home-improvement loans with terms in the 5 to 15 year range, plus promotional deferred-interest or reduced-payment periods on some programs, and no prepayment penalty on the loans we present. Rates and approval are the lender's call, not ours, and we will show you the total and the monthly side by side.
If a storm claim is funding part of the job, the money arrives in stages. Your carrier releases actual cash value (ACV, the depreciated amount) up front, then the replacement cost value (RCV) balance after completion is documented. We sequence the draw schedule around that so you are not floating the whole job.
On permits: the City of Madison requires a building permit for a reroof, and every surrounding municipality has its own process. We pull it and we handle the inspection. If your home is in a local historic district (Mansion Hill, Third Lake Ridge, University Heights, Marquette Bungalows, First Settlement), changing roofing material generally requires Landmarks Commission review and a certificate of appropriateness. Composite shake often reviews well in those districts precisely because it reads as wood, but the approval takes calendar time. Start early.
Synthetic shake vs. real cedar shake in Wisconsin
Real cedar is beautiful for about ten years, then it becomes a maintenance project. That is the blunt truth about wood roofing in this climate.
We get dozens of freeze-thaw swings a winter, humid summers, and north slopes under mature oaks that never fully dry. What we find on cedar roofs in Madison, Middleton, Verona, Waunakee and along the Mendota and Kegonsa shorelines:
- Splitting and cupping from repeated wet-freeze-dry cycles
- Moss and algae on shaded slopes, holding moisture against the wood
- Rot at butt ends and around valleys and chimney flashing
- Curled shakes that lift, then leave in a 60 mph straight-line wind
Cedar can reach its rated life, but only with cleaning, treatment and shake replacement every few years. Most homeowners do that twice and quit.
Composite eliminates the treatment cycle. Nothing organic for moss to feed on, nothing absorbing water and freezing, no fasteners backing out of softening wood. You also gain the Class 4 impact rating and the Class A fire assembly cedar cannot offer, which matters on a wooded lot near Cross Plains or Black Earth where an insurer may restrict wood roofs outright.
What maintenance composite actually needs
Low maintenance is not no maintenance. Plan on:
- Keeping gutters and downspouts clear so water is not backing up under the first course
- Clearing leaf and needle debris out of valleys and behind chimneys, especially on wooded lots
- An occasional rinse on deeply shaded north slopes, where surface grime can still collect (no pressure washing, ever)
- Trimming limbs back off the roof so nothing abrades the surface in the wind
- A flashing and sealant check every few years, since caulk at chimneys and skylights ages faster than the shingle
That is a fraction of a cedar schedule, and it is closer to what an asphalt roof asks for.
Synthetic shake vs. architectural asphalt shingles
Asphalt is the value play. Composite shake is the appearance-and-longevity play. Both are legitimate.
A quality asphalt shingle roof replacement with architectural shingles runs roughly $4.50-$8.00 per square foot installed here, with 20-30 years of real service. Composite shake is two to three times that, with a 50-year limited warranty and a look asphalt cannot fake.
Composite earns its money on:
- Homes where the roof is part of the architecture: Tudors, Craftsman bungalows, lake homes, steep multi-gable rooflines
- Houses that already had cedar and would look wrong in asphalt
- Owners staying 15 or more years who are tired of re-roofing every 22
- Neighborhoods with covenants or historic-district expectations around wood-look roofing
Asphalt is the smarter buy on simple gable roofs you can barely see, on rentals, on homes you are selling in a few years, or on storm claims where the upgrade money is not there.

Will it look fake or cheap?
Installed correctly, no. Installed lazily, yes, and the difference is layout, not the product.
The plastic look comes from uniform widths, a single flat color and a repeating pattern. Good composite systems ship in multiple widths and several color tones per pallet, and the installer is supposed to pull from several bundles at once and stagger widths randomly, the way hand-split cedar actually lands on a roof. Crews working straight off one open bundle create visible stripes and repeats. That is an installation failure, and it is permanent.
Where this product shines is easy to picture around here. West-side neighborhoods like Nakoma, Sunset Village and Westmorland are full of 1920s and 1930s houses still carrying original cedar over 1x4 skip sheathing, steep pitches, multiple chimneys and rooflines you see from the sidewalk before you see the house. Same story on the lake homes where owners are done power-washing moss off the north slope every other spring. Fading over 20-30 years
Color is molded through and UV-stabilized, so composite does not chalk and streak the way a coated product does. It does mellow. Expect some softening of tone over two or three decades, more on south and west exposures. Most warranties include fade coverage, but with a defined limit on acceptable color change and prorated after an initial period. Read the fade language for your specific product before you sign.
Wisconsin winter and Wisconsin summer
Cold-weather installation. Polymer stiffens as temperatures drop, so cold work means keeping bundles warm, hand-nailing more, dialing back nail-gun pressure and following the manufacturer's low-temperature instructions. Self-adhering ice-and-water membrane needs enough surface temperature to bond. In deep cold or active snow we will dry the roof in and finish the field when conditions cooperate rather than force a detail that leaks in March. Emergency tarping and leak stops never wait for weather.
Summer heat. These products do not warp, soften or sag at Wisconsin temperatures. They are engineered for climates far hotter than a 95-degree stretch in Madison, and warping complaints trace back to installation, not chemistry. Polymer expands and contracts, so manufacturers specify a nail zone, a nail-head depth and a gap between shakes. Over-driven nails or shakes butted tight are what buckle on a hot south slope. Proper attic intake and exhaust keeps deck temperatures down and helps every material up there.
Ice dams. Ice dams are an insulation and ventilation problem, not a shingle problem, and no roofing material prevents them. What protects you is a properly installed ice barrier at the eaves (we run it from the eave well inside the exterior wall line, further on low pitches), clear soffit intake, adequate ridge exhaust and air sealing at the attic plane. We inspect all of that before we quote.
Snow. Composite shake's texture holds snow rather than dumping it in one sheet the way standing seam metal can, which is a plus over doors and walkways. On steep pitches above entries we still discuss snow guards.

Insurance, hail and the Class 4 question
Hail is a fact of life in Dane, Rock, Columbia, Dodge and Sauk counties, and Class 4 composite is genuinely more resistant to the small-to-medium stones we see most. Three things to know.
The premium credit. Many carriers credit Class 4 impact-rated roofing, but in Wisconsin that credit is voluntary, not mandated the way some southern-plains states structure it. Expect a modest single-digit to low-double-digit percentage on the roof portion of your premium. It is a nice offset. It will not pay for the upgrade, and any salesperson implying otherwise is guessing. Get the number from your agent in writing before you buy.
Cosmetic-damage exclusions. Class 4 shingles can still be dented or marred by large hail without losing function, and cosmetic-damage endorsements are increasingly common on Wisconsin policies. Some carriers will not pay for damage that does not affect performance. Read your endorsements now, not after the storm.
Claim reality. Insurance replaces what you had. If a covered storm destroys a cedar roof, moving to composite is often a productive conversation with the adjuster. If you had asphalt, expect the carrier to fund an asphalt-equivalent scope while you pay the upgrade difference. Know whether your policy is ACV or RCV, because on a premium roof that gap is thousands.
When you do have a claim, we meet your adjuster on the roof and document every bruise, fractured mat, wind-creased shingle and damaged vent so the scope reflects what is actually up there. That is the core of our storm damage restoration work across Dane County.
Weight, structure, repairs and resale
Weight. Composite shake generally runs about 200-350 pounds per roofing square, with polyurethane products like CeDUR at the light end. That is comparable to cedar and far lighter than concrete tile or slate, so most homes framed for asphalt or cedar carry it fine. We still verify rafter and truss size and spacing, decking type and thickness, ridge deflection and the manufacturer's minimum deck requirement before quoting.
Repairability. Individual shakes can be replaced years later, a real advantage over patched asphalt. The risk is color availability, since manufacturers do retire colors and lines. We order an extra bundle or two on every composite job and leave them labeled in the garage or attic so a future repair matches.
Walkability and solar. Walkable with care, but it is not asphalt. Step in the nailing zone, not on the exposed butt, and keep satellite installers and chimney sweeps off it unless they know the product. If solar is in your plans, tell us before we start so mounts and approved flashings go in during the install.
Resale. We will not quote you a national ROI percentage, because those are surveys, not appraisals. What we see in the Madison market: a wood-look premium roof helps a house styled for it, removes the "roof needs replacing" objection entirely, and a transferable 50-year warranty is a real talking point. Ask for the transfer terms in writing so you can hand them to your realtor.
Who does the work, and what the job looks like
On a premium system the installer matters as much as the shingle, so hold us to that.

Install on a cut-up 30-square roof with dormers and valleys typically runs 4 to 7 working days, versus 2 to 3 for asphalt, because of the layout and blending work. Add calendar time up front if you need historic-district review.
- Site protection. Driveway and landscape tarping, plywood over AC condensers and window wells, dumpster placement you approve, and a magnet sweep of the yard every evening. It is loud for a few days. We tell you which days.
Who synthetic shake makes sense for
It fits if you love the cedar look and hate cedar maintenance, plan to be in the house 15 or more years, have a visible and architecturally significant roof, want the Class A fire assembly on a wooded lot, and are done gambling on hail season.
It probably does not fit if the roof is barely visible, if you are selling soon, or if a storm claim is funding the job with no upgrade budget. In those cases a quality residential roofing system in architectural shingles is the better use of your money, and we will say so out loud.
