What Is LP SmartSide, Exactly?

LP SmartSide is engineered wood siding - not solid wood, not vinyl, not fiber cement. It's made from wood strands that are treated with a borate-based preservative (LP calls it the SmartGuard process), then bonded with resin and wax, and pressed into panels, lap boards, or trim pieces.

The result looks and feels more like real wood than fiber cement does. It's lighter than fiber cement. It takes paint well. And it's designed to resist the things that kill traditional wood siding: moisture, fungal decay, and insects.

Think of it as the best traits of wood siding, with the worst traits engineered out.

Paint and finish. LP SmartSide needs to be painted (or comes pre-primed and needs a topcoat). In Wisconsin's climate, you're likely repainting every 8-12 years. Fiber cement is heavier, harder to cut, and harder to install. In cold weather, fiber cement can be more brittle. LP SmartSide is lighter, easier to work with, and some contractors argue it takes paint better in our climate because it expands and contracts less dramatically than fiber cement in extreme cold.

Real cedar or pine looks beautiful. It also requires significantly more maintenance, is susceptible to rot and insects, and costs more. Most people aren't.

Real Cost Expectations

The bigger cost variable is what's under your current siding. If there's rot in the sheathing, damaged housewrap, or deteriorated trim - that gets addressed when the siding comes off. That's not a contractor upselling you. That's just what responsible work looks like.

What Bad LP SmartSide Installs Look Like

We've seen the shortcuts, so you know what to watch for when getting quotes:

• No back-priming on cut ends. Every cut edge of LP SmartSide needs to be sealed before installation. Skipping this is the number-one cause of premature failure. It voids the warranty and lets moisture wick in from the end grain.
• Installing too close to grade. LP specs require clearance from soil and concrete. Contractors who rush skip this. It leads to chronic moisture exposure at the base of the wall.
• Skipping or cheap-ing out on housewrap. LP SmartSide is not a moisture barrier by itself. What goes behind it matters just as much.
• Wrong nailing pattern. LP publishes specific nailing requirements. Ignoring them leads to boards that work loose or crack over time.

If a quote comes in dramatically lower than others, ask what's being skipped. Usually something is.
