Roofing for a historic river town and the Waterloo farm country

A Waterloo roof fights ice at the eaves of the older downtown homes, damp lots along the Maunesha River, and open wind across the Jefferson County fields. We build for all of it, with our own crews and a written plan before anyone climbs on.

The problems Waterloo roofs face most01 / 08

Where a Waterloo roof gives out first

Ranked by what wears down homes in a small historic river town ringed by farm country, and each one tied straight to the work our crews do.

1
Ice dams on the older downtown homesLong cold spells and melt that refreezes at the eave back water up under the shingles. Steep, multi-plane roofs and original attic venting on the historic in-town houses make it worse.
Ice dam & winter workplus ventilation fix
2
Hail and straight-line windSouthern Wisconsin takes hail and thunderstorm wind every warm season. Bruised shingles often show up only as a leak later, and open fields give wind a long run at exposed roofs.

3
Roofs at the end of their lifeMuch of the housing in town is older, and many roofs are simply worn out, failing first at valleys, flashing, chimneys and vents.
Roof replacementand leak tracing
4
Freeze-thaw and damp river lotsRepeated freezing cracks aging shingles and splits gutters, while shaded and low-lying lots near the Maunesha River hold moisture, grow moss and overflow undersized gutters onto siding.
Siding & guttersand roof repair
5
Barns, sheds and machine buildingsThe farmsteads around Waterloo carry big barn and outbuilding roofs in the open, where large spans need the right fastening and often make the most sense in metal.

What your Waterloo roof is up against02 / 08

Three forces wear out Waterloo roofs. Here is how we handle each one.

Waterloo is a small Jefferson County city where Highways 89 and 19 cross, built along the Maunesha River with a historic downtown and farm country all around. One free inspection tells you exactly where your roof stands.

Ice at the eaves

Melt refreezes at the cold edge and backs water under the shingles on steep, detailed older roofs.

We fix the venting and eave so the dam stops forming
Moisture near the river

Shaded and low-lying lots stay damp, and clogged or undersized gutters dump water against siding and foundations.

We size seamless gutters and trace the leak to its source
Hail and open-field wind

Storms cross the surrounding farm country with nothing to slow them, bruising shingles and lifting edges.

We inspect free and document every hit for your claim

Signs a Waterloo roof is asking for help07 / 08

When to get it looked at

Most roof trouble shows up small before it shows up on the ceiling. These are worth a free look.

Ice building at the eavesA thick ridge of ice or long icicles along the gutter line means melt is refreezing and can back up under the shingles.
Stains after a thaw or stormA brown ring on a ceiling often traces back to flashing or an ice dam backup, not the spot right below it.
Granules in the guttersPiles of shingle grit after hail or a long winter are a sign the surface is wearing thin.
Lifted or missing shinglesWind across the open fields can peel edges and corners, especially on exposed and outbuilding roofs.
Overflowing gutters or mossWater spilling over the gutters or green growth on a shaded roof means moisture is sitting where it should not.
A knock after a stormIf an out-of-town crew is at the door pushing a fast signature, get a local second opinion first.

When the big storms came through the Madison-area in April 2026, I immediately started looking for a reputable roofer—who also understood the importance of weather-resistant materials that can withstand hail and wind. It didn’t take me long to find Brad from BCG. We had damage that needed to be repaired before the next round of storms came through later that day and Brad had a crew out within hours. Our neighbors also had damage, and when their roofing company didn’t show up, Brad and his crew also took on fixing their damage on the spot. The contracting process was done over email and we were able to clearly understand all of the options available to us. On the day of install, the crew was efficient and fast with their work. But also, mistakes can happen. And what matters to us is not that there’s perfection (because that’s not realistic), but how a contractor deals with a mistake. As they were taking down the tarps when they were finished with the roof, one of our lights next to the garage broke. Brad helped find a replacement online and had it shipped directly to our house! Such great service! All in all, we were very happy with Brad and the service we received from him and BCG. We’ve since recommended their services to several of our friends and neighbors who also had storm damage. While I hope we won’t have to do that again for a long time, we would work with BCG again in a heartbeat!

I am extremely pleased with the service Matt Walmer from Buckshot General Contracting (BGC) provided for me during the hailstorm damage in Madison in April. I had just switched insurance companies one year ago and was worried about how much they would cover. Matt assured me everything would be taken care of and had nothing to worry about. True to his word he immediately answered phone calls during off hours even when he was with daughter at volleyball and answering texts in seconds Matt met up with assessor and arrived 20 minutes early. During roof replacement he stopped in 3 times to check the progress and next day he came back to do a walk around to make sure the cleanup was to his standards. I have been so blessed to work with Matt at BGC as my contractor as everything went so smoothly. No problems with my insurance company and I was the first one on my block to get my roof done. I also was telling Matt about some of my neighbors having problems with their insurance and he was willing to look at their paperwork and giving them advice on how to deal with them. I can proudly say I announced to them how good Matt was and gave them his card. Thank you so much Matt for your excellent service and being a great representative for Buckshot General Contracting. These days days it’s hard to find a business that is 100% committed to making sure the customer is their #1 concern. Going to be doing more work and sticking with them as I know it will be top quality.

We contacted BGC after storm damage and had them completely re-roof and re-side our house, garage, and shed. The entire process was incredibly smooth from start to finish. They were easy to work with, handled all the details, and made what could have been a stressful situation completely worry-free. Our contact, Jayce Kirkland, was outstanding. His professionalism, communication, and courteous demeanor were truly a breath of fresh air. He took care of everything for us and made sure the project stayed on track every step of the way. We couldn’t be happier with the experience and have and would highly recommend BGC to anyone needing roofing or siding work!

Waterloo roofing questions08 / 08

Straight answers for Waterloo homeowners

The questions we hear most from downtown, the river lots and the farm country. Still stuck, call and ask.

Ask us anything →

Waterloo winters bring long cold spells and repeated melt and refreeze, and many homes in and around the historic downtown are older, with steep pitches, several roof planes and original attic ventilation. Warm air escapes into the attic, melts the snow up top, and the runoff refreezes at the cold eave until an ice dam pushes water back under the shingles. The lasting fix is rarely just chipping at the ice. We look at attic insulation and ventilation, the eave and valley detailing, and the flashing, so the roof stays cold edge to edge and the water has nowhere to back up.

Yes. Older homes around the Waterloo Downtown Historic District carry complex rooflines, dormers and deep valleys where detail matters more than speed. We match the pitch, profile and flashing to what the house needs and keep the lines it was built with. A new GAF system on a home like this can carry the GAF Golden Pledge warranty, and we review its coverage and exclusions with you before anything is signed.

Yes. Buckshot General Contracting holds Wisconsin license DC-080900045 and Illinois license 104017198, carries insurance, and holds a BBB A+ rating. We are happy to show proof of license and insurance before any work starts.

We inspect the roof free, document every hit with photos and measurements, help you file, and meet your adjuster on the roof so nothing legitimate is missed. Our own crew then builds it back, and on a covered claim you generally pay only your deductible. Coverage is decided by your carrier and your policy, so we never promise a claim outcome.

Architectural asphalt shingles suit most Waterloo homes and handle freeze and thaw well when the eaves and ventilation are set up right. Standing seam metal costs more but sheds snow fast and lasts decades, which many owners prefer on barns, machine sheds and steeper roofs. We walk you through the trade-offs for your pitch, your exposure and how long you plan to stay.

Yes. We serve Waterloo and the farm country around it, along with Marshall, Lake Mills, Watertown, Deerfield, Columbus and Sun Prairie. Our Madison shop is about 27 minutes away. If you are on the edge of the area and are not sure, call and we will tell you plainly.

As a GAF Master Elite contractor we can offer the GAF Golden Pledge warranty on qualifying systems, which covers both the materials and our workmanship. We review its coverage and exclusions with you before you sign, so there are no surprises later.

Cost depends on the size and pitch of the roof, how many layers come off, the condition of the decking, and how cut up the roofline is. A steep historic roof downtown is a different job than a walkable ranch on the edge of town. Most full replacements land between $8,500 and $18,000. Ranges here are typical rather than a quote, and only your written estimate is binding. We give you an itemized written estimate after a free inspection, and financing is available on approved credit.
