No. Heat cables melt a drainage channel through ice and snow so meltwater has a path off the roof. Ice still forms at the eave around the cable. They manage the symptom, not the cause, and the cause is almost always warm air leaking from the house into the attic.

Short answer: heated gutters and roof ice cables do work, but not at the job most homeowners think they're buying.
They keep a drainage channel open so meltwater has a path off the roof and out the downspout. That's real, and on the right house it saves you from water running down the inside of a wall every February.
What they do not do is stop ice dams from forming. And they do not fix why your roof is making ice in the first place.
If you're in Madison, Middleton, Sun Prairie or anywhere in Dane County shopping for heat cable today, you probably already have a ridge of ice at the eave. Let's deal with that first, then figure out whether cable is the right money to spend.
The 60-second check you can do tonight
Grab a flashlight and stand in the yard after dark. What you're looking for tells you which problem you have.
- Icicles at the gutter, snow lying evenly across the whole roof. Usually normal melt-freeze cycling, sun on the shingles, maybe a shaded eave. Cable is a reasonable candidate.
- Icicles plus a bare or dark streak of shingle right above the ice, while the rest of the roof still holds snow. That streak is heat escaping from inside your house. No cable will fix that. Air sealing and insulation will.
- Your roof is patchy and bare while the neighbor's same-facing roof holds even snow. Same story. Heat loss.
Then go up in the attic on a cold night. Frost on the underside of the roof deck, frost on nail points, or air you can feel moving around a bath fan or the attic hatch, that's the leak. Snow that sits evenly on a north-facing plane that never sees sun all winter is a different animal, and that one really is a cable candidate.
If you have an ice dam right now, do this
Start from the ground and stay off the roof. A telescoping roof rake with a plastic blade, used from the ground, is the safest thing a homeowner can do. Pull snow off the bottom 3-4 feet of roof in strips. Less snow at the eave means less water to freeze.
Then get the dam steamed off, not chipped off. What matters about steam is the low pressure: it melts ice without blasting the shingle surface (steam is roughly 212 degrees at atmospheric pressure, and the wand output varies by machine). Expect steaming to be billed hourly with a one to two hour minimum, commonly a few hundred dollars per hour in Dane County during a freeze. Ask for the hourly rate and the minimum up front so there are no surprises. It's still cheap next to a drywall and insulation repair.
Please don't do these, no matter what a video shows you:
- Hammers, hatchets, chisels or ice picks. Asphalt shingles are brittle below freezing. You'll crack them and knock granules loose, and now you have a leak in July too.
- Pressure washers. Same damage, plus you drive water under the shingle.
- Climbing a snow-covered roof. Somebody in Dane County gets hurt doing this every winter.
About salt socks. Some manufacturers and even some municipalities still suggest calcium chloride in a stocking laid in the gutter trough, so I won't pretend it does nothing. We don't use it because chloride pits aluminum and galvanized steel, corrodes hangers, fasteners and drip edge, stains siding and masonry below, and kills whatever's planted underneath. If you're going to do it anyway, use calcium chloride (not rock salt), keep it in the trough only and never on the shingle field, and rinse the gutters and the ground below in spring. Steam is still the better tool.
If water is already showing on a ceiling, get a bucket under it and stop there. Relieving a bulge sounds simple, but above that ceiling there can be a junction box, a recessed light can, or older wiring, and older Madison-area plaster can let go in sheets instead of draining in a trickle. If it's drywall, you know exactly what's above it, and it's nowhere near a fixture or box, a small hole low in the bulge drains it in one spot. Otherwise leave it and call someone. Once water is in the roof assembly, decking, insulation and drywall start degrading fast, which is why we'd rather look at it now than in April.

Why your roof is making ice in the first place
Ice dams come from heat, not cold. Warm air escapes your living space into the attic, warms the underside of the roof deck, and melts the snow on top. That meltwater runs down to the eave, which hangs past the heated part of the house and stays at outdoor temperature. There it refreezes.
Do that through a Wisconsin January and you build a solid dam at the roof edge. The next round of meltwater has nowhere to go, so it backs up under the shingles, finds a nail hole, and shows up on your bedroom ceiling.
What we usually find in the attic:
- Not enough insulation depth (plenty of 1950s-1970s Madison-area homes have 4-6 inches where they need 14-18)
- Air leaks at bath fans, recessed lights, chimney chases and the attic hatch
- Bath or dryer fans dumping warm moist air into the attic instead of outside
- Blocked or missing soffit vents, so cold air never washes the underside of the deck
- Insulation stuffed tight into the eave, choking the air path
Fix those and the deck stays cold, snow stays snow, and the ice dam mostly stops happening. That's the cure. Everything below is about managing the symptom when the cure isn't practical.
No, your gutters are not causing this
Ice dams form on the roof edge whether gutters exist or not. Tearing off good gutters solves nothing and trades ice dams for a wet foundation. Gutters do make it worse in one way: once the trough freezes solid it holds ice against the eave, and loaded gutters get heavy enough to pull hangers out of the fascia. The answer is better drainage and less meltwater, not no gutters.
What heated gutters and roof ice melt systems actually do
Heat cable creates a melted path. That's the whole job. It does not warm the roof, clear the snow field, or melt a dam that's already four inches thick.
A correctly run roof ice melt system:
- Melts a narrow channel through eave ice so water reaches the gutter
- Keeps the gutter trough from freezing solid
- Keeps at least one open path down the downspout to daylight
- Keeps valleys draining, which is where the worst leaks start
Every one of those is drainage, not prevention. That's why the zig-zag exists: each triangle gives water a downhill route instead of a wall of ice to climb. Skip the downspout and you've wasted your money, because cable that stops at the gutter just moves the jam sideways.
When heat cable is genuinely the right answer
Some houses can't be fixed with insulation and ventilation. On those, cable is the honest answer, not a shortcut.
North-facing planes and valleys
North slopes in south-central Wisconsin barely see sun from December through February. Snow sits, ice builds, and no reasonable amount of attic work changes it. A valley on a north exposure is the most common place we recommend cable.
Low-slope porch and addition roofs
Covered porches, three-season rooms and bump-outs often have shallow pitch and almost no space above the ceiling. Nowhere to insulate, no path to ventilate. Cable or a heated eave panel is frequently the only real option.
Architecture that traps snow
Roof-to-wall intersections, dead valleys, dormer clusters, and second-story roofs draining onto first-story roofs. Snow piles where it can't slide, then melts against a wall.
Historic and cathedral-ceiling homes
Plenty of older homes near downtown Madison and on the isthmus have no attic at all: cathedral ceilings, knee walls, plaster nobody wants to open. Re-insulating means tearing into the ceiling or rebuilding the roof assembly. Cable is a reasonable, reversible choice.
Cape Cods and 1.5-story homes
Knee-wall geometry is brutally hard to air-seal. Many of these need both: sealing where it's reachable, plus cable at the problem eaves.

Types compared: self-regulating, constant-wattage, panels
Self-regulating cable. What we recommend for most homes. The core changes resistance with temperature, so it makes more heat where it's cold and less where it isn't. It can cross itself without overheating and uses noticeably less power. More up front, cheaper and safer to run.
Constant-wattage cable. Same output along its whole length whenever it's on. This is most cheap big-box kits. It works, but it burns more electricity, comes in fixed lengths you can't cut, and can overheat where it overlaps.
Heated eave panels. Metal panels at the eave with the element behind them. Cleaner look, no visible zig-zag, wider melt band, higher install cost. Worth considering on a front elevation or a low-slope porch roof.
Gutter and downspout runs. Cable in the trough and down the full downspout. Almost always a necessary companion to eave cable, not a standalone fix.
What heated gutters in Madison actually cost, installed
Ranges we quote around Dane County, and every house is different:
- Professionally installed self-regulating cable on eaves, gutter and downspouts: roughly $15-$30 per linear foot of roof edge covered. Most single problem areas land at $900-$2,500. As a real-world anchor, a one-story 1960s ranch on Madison's east side with one bad north eave, about 60 feet of edge and two downspouts, comes in around the low $1,000s with a sensor controller included.
- Heated eave panel systems: roughly $35-$60 per linear foot.
- New dedicated GFCI exterior circuit by a licensed electrician: usually a few hundred dollars, more if the panel is far away or full.
- Complex homes with multiple problem eaves, valleys and a second story: $3,000-$6,000 or more.
Price drivers: total length, roof height and pitch, number of valleys and chimneys, circuit distance, and whether a controller is included (it should be).
Now compare it to the cure. Air sealing and re-insulating a typical Madison attic to current depth commonly runs $2,000-$5,000. That's the same neighborhood as a serious cable install, except insulation costs nothing to operate, lowers your heating bill all winter, doesn't wear out in a decade, and actually stops the ice. Will insurance cover the ceiling damage?
Usually yes for the water damage inside, usually no for the ice itself. Here's the plain version, and your own policy is the final word.
- Generally covered on a standard HO-3 policy: sudden, accidental water damage from an ice dam backing up under the shingles. Stained or collapsed drywall and plaster, ruined attic insulation, damaged flooring, damaged contents.
- Generally not covered: the ice dam removal itself, roof raking, gutter repair, heat cable, and anything the adjuster classifies as long-term seepage, wear or maintenance. A stain that's been growing three winters is a hard claim to win.
- Deductible reality: many Dane County policies sit at $1,000-$2,500, some are a percentage of dwelling value. If the repair is $1,600 and the deductible is $1,000, filing rarely makes sense.
- Document before you clean up. Photos with dates, wide shots and close-ups, the exterior ice, the wet insulation, and the date you first noticed it. Keep every receipt, including the steaming invoice.
On the rate question: water claims are the ones carriers scrutinize. One claim after a bad freeze is usually survivable. Two or three water claims in a few years is where rate increases and non-renewal talk starts, and claims follow you on your CLUE report. Rule of thumb: if the loss is barely above your deductible, pay it yourself and spend the money on the cause. If ceilings, insulation and flooring are all involved, file.
When a claim is in play, we'll meet your adjuster on site and document what we find, same as we do for hail and wind storm damage claims. It keeps the scope honest on both sides.
Fire and electrical safety, honestly
Cable fires are rare and almost always traceable to installation, not the product.
- Use UL-listed cable with the manufacturer's own clips, connectors and end caps.
- Put it on a dedicated GFCI-protected exterior circuit. No extension cords out a cracked window.
- Never splice with wire nuts and tape. Use the manufacturer's kit or don't splice.
- Never let constant-wattage cable overlap itself. That's where hot spots happen.
- Don't bury cable under leaves, debris or granule sludge in a gutter. Trapped heat plus a nicked jacket is the actual failure mode.
- Inspect the jacket every fall. Cracks, squirrel chew marks, crushed spots, corroded plug ends: replace it, don't nurse it.
Installed right, and what you can safely do yourself
Done right:
- Cable held with manufacturer roof clips tucked under shingle edges, never nailed or stapled through a shingle
- Triangle spacing sized to the actual overhang, usually reaching 18-30 inches up from the eave
- Cable carried through the gutter and all the way down the downspout to daylight
- Extra loops in valleys and behind chimneys where ice is thickest
- A thermostat or moisture-and-temperature sensor so it runs only during melt-freeze conditions
Failures we get called to fix: cable nailed through shingles (a leak on purpose), cable that stops at the gutter, zig-zag that doesn't reach past the exterior wall line, overlapping constant-wattage cooking a spot, and systems plugged in November 1 and forgotten until April.
DIY? Partly. A gutter and downspout run on a one-story with an existing exterior GFCI outlet is a fair weekend project. Not DIY: steep roofs, second stories, valley and chimney work, anything requiring you to walk a snow-covered roof, and any new circuit, which should go to a licensed electrician.
Does it void your shingle warranty?
Manufacturer roof clips, used correctly, do not void a shingle warranty. Nails, staples or screws through the shingle field do, and they void the workmanship side of any roof warranty too. Every major shingle manufacturer excludes damage caused by items others attach to the roof, so attachment method is the whole question.
If your shingles are past 15 years, curling or shedding granules, get the roof evaluated before you add anything to it. Under the IRC ice barrier provision adopted through Wisconsin's Uniform Dwelling Code (SPS 321), a new roof needs ice barrier membrane from the eave to at least 24 inches inside the interior face of the exterior wall, which on most Madison-area homes works out to 3-6 feet of coverage. A properly detailed asphalt shingle roof replacement in Madison with that membrane, plus corrected ventilation, does more against ice dam leaks than any cable can.
Operating it, maintaining it, and how long it lasts
Turn it on before the storm, not after. Cable can't tunnel through six inches of existing ice in any useful amount of time. Energize it when the forecast shows accumulating snow near freezing. A sensor controller does this better than you will.
Each season: check the jacket and connections, clean the gutters so the cable isn't sitting in wet leaves, verify the GFCI trips and resets, then shut it down in spring. Never run it in summer.
Power use. Typical residential self-regulating cable draws roughly 5-8 watts per foot when energized, so a 100-foot install pulls about 500-800 watts, similar to a hair dryer on low. At typical local winter electric rates with a sensor-controlled run time of a few hundred hours, most homeowners see a winter cost in the tens of dollars. Leave it plugged in from November to March and you can multiply that several times over. The controller is the cheapest upgrade you'll ever make.
Lifespan and warranty. Manufacturers generally rate residential roof cable for about 5-10 years of service, and that matches what we see pulling old runs off roofs here. Budget for replacing the cable eventually, not the whole system. On our installs, our labor is warranted in writing and the cable carries the manufacturer's warranty. If it quits in year three, call us: we test the circuit and the sensor first, because more often than not the cable is fine and the connection or controller isn't. Ask any contractor for both warranty terms in writing before you sign.
One more thing: heat cable is not snow retention. Metal roof shedding slabs over a doorway is a snow guard conversation.
