    —  What Storm Damage Does

    SEC 01 / 07

Three kinds of damage in Dane County storms.

Madison's climate puts roofs through hail, violent summer thunderstorms, and wind that regularly exceeds 60 mph. A professional inspection, not a DIY walk-around, is the only reliable way to know what a storm actually did.

    ✓

    Hail, more than dents

Hail as small as one inch cracks shingle granules, exposing the mat. It then deteriorates over two to three seasons, which is why insurers want prompt documented inspections after a Dane County hail event. Hail also dents soffit, fascia, and gutters.

    ✓

    Wind, lifted seals

When wind exceeds the shingle's rating, shingles lift and break their seal. Lifted shingles let rain drive under the underlayment, saturating decking. Wind claims are frequently denied without clear documentation.

    ✓

    Hidden, the costly kind

Impact bruising creates soft spots invisible from the ground and cracked flashing seals that leak slowly. It compounds silently for months before a ceiling stain shows, by which point decking rot has started.

    —  How to Spot It

    SEC 02 / 07

6 signs your Madison roof took damage.

Most of these you can check from the ground or your gutters. Spot even one after a storm and get a documented inspection before your 12-month window closes.

✓Heavy dark, sand-like deposits in the gutter mean the shingle surface is fracturing, accelerating UV breakdown of the mat underneath.

✓Heavy dark, sand-like deposits in the gutter mean the shingle surface is fracturing, accelerating UV breakdown of the mat underneath.

✓Circular dents on gutters, downspouts, aluminum fascia, and vents almost always mean the shingles above took similar impacts.

✓Lifted tab edges, cracked faces, or bare decking patches, visible with binoculars, all let water in during the next rain.

✓Dark drywall staining or wet attic insulation confirms active intrusion. By the time it's inside, damage has been compounding. Urgent.

✓Around chimneys, skylights, and vents, hail and thermal shock crack the caulk, running water behind the flashing.

✓Dented soffit panels open ventilation gaps and compromise the attic ventilation your roof warranty depends on.

    —  A Real Dane County Claim

    SEC 03 / 07

After a severe hail event in Sun Prairie, a homeowner received an initial Actual Cash Value settlement of just $4,200 for repairs. After Buckshot attended the re-inspection with our full photo documentation, the claim was reopened and settled at $22,000 for a complete replacement, the full cost minus their deductible.

    —  How We Handle Your Madison Claim

    SEC 04 / 07

From inspection to check. We attend the adjuster visit.

This is where Buckshot works differently from most Madison contractors. A step-by-step process that takes the insurance paperwork off you entirely.

    01

    Free inspection

Full inspection of shingles, ridge, valleys, flashing, soffit, fascia, and gutters. Every impact photographed. Written summary before we leave.

    02

    Claim documentation

A detailed damage report formatted for insurance review, photos with measurements and a line-item estimate in the adjuster's format.

    03

    Adjuster visit, we attend

Our Madison project manager attends, walks the adjuster through each point, and advocates a complete scope. The step most contractors skip.

    04

    Approved scope

Once approved we schedule fast. Most Dane County replacements are completed in a single day. We handle the paperwork, not you.

    05

    Final docs

Final photos submitted for depreciation recovery. Permit closeout, warranty registration, and supplements if scope increased.

    —  Know Your Coverage

    SEC 05 / 07

What you actually pay depends on your policy.

Your policy type is the biggest factor in your out-of-pocket cost. We read your policy summary with you during the inspection and explain it in plain terms.

    ✓

    Replacement Cost Value

    RCV, the better case

Covers full replacement cost minus your deductible. For most Madison storm claims this means you pay only your deductible and we bill the insurer for the rest, the basis of the Sun Prairie outcome above.

When the big storms came through the Madison-area in April 2026, I immediately started looking for a reputable roofer—who also understood the importance of weather-resistant materials that can withstand hail and wind. It didn’t take me long to find Brad from BCG. We had damage that needed to be repaired before the next round of storms came through later that day and Brad had a crew out within hours. Our neighbors also had damage, and when their roofing company didn’t show up, Brad and his crew also took on fixing their damage on the spot. The contracting process was done over email and we were able to clearly understand all of the options available to us. On the day of install, the crew was efficient and fast with their work. But also, mistakes can happen. And what matters to us is not that there’s perfection (because that’s not realistic), but how a contractor deals with a mistake. As they were taking down the tarps when they were finished with the roof, one of our lights next to the garage broke. Brad helped find a replacement online and had it shipped directly to our house! Such great service! All in all, we were very happy with Brad and the service we received from him and BCG. We’ve since recommended their services to several of our friends and neighbors who also had storm damage. While I hope we won’t have to do that again for a long time, we would work with BCG again in a heartbeat!

I am extremely pleased with the service Matt Walmer from Buckshot General Contracting (BGC) provided for me during the hailstorm damage in Madison in April. I had just switched insurance companies one year ago and was worried about how much they would cover. Matt assured me everything would be taken care of and had nothing to worry about. True to his word he immediately answered phone calls during off hours even when he was with daughter at volleyball and answering texts in seconds Matt met up with assessor and arrived 20 minutes early. During roof replacement he stopped in 3 times to check the progress and next day he came back to do a walk around to make sure the cleanup was to his standards. I have been so blessed to work with Matt at BGC as my contractor as everything went so smoothly. No problems with my insurance company and I was the first one on my block to get my roof done. I also was telling Matt about some of my neighbors having problems with their insurance and he was willing to look at their paperwork and giving them advice on how to deal with them. I can proudly say I announced to them how good Matt was and gave them his card. Thank you so much Matt for your excellent service and being a great representative for Buckshot General Contracting. These days days it’s hard to find a business that is 100% committed to making sure the customer is their #1 concern. Going to be doing more work and sticking with them as I know it will be top quality.

We contacted BGC after storm damage and had them completely re-roof and re-side our house, garage, and shed. The entire process was incredibly smooth from start to finish. They were easy to work with, handled all the details, and made what could have been a stressful situation completely worry-free. Our contact, Jayce Kirkland, was outstanding. His professionalism, communication, and courteous demeanor were truly a breath of fresh air. He took care of everything for us and made sure the project stayed on track every step of the way. We couldn’t be happier with the experience and have and would highly recommend BGC to anyone needing roofing or siding work!

    FAQ

    Frequently asked questions.

    Storm just hit?

    Answered 24/7 · Free inspection

Most standard Wisconsin policies cover storm damage to roofing, siding, and gutters from hail and wind. Coverage depends on policy type, RCV covers full replacement minus your deductible, while ACV factors in depreciation. We review your policy summary during the inspection and explain what your specific coverage means before you file.

Yes. Hail falls across a whole area, so if homes near you in Dane County are being approved for storm claims, the same storm very likely hit your roof too, and the damage may not be visible from your yard. A free inspection tells you whether you have a claim before your filing window runs out.

For most covered claims on an RCV policy, yes, you pay your deductible and we bill the insurer for the approved scope. The key is a complete, accurate scope, which is exactly why we attend the adjuster visit and advocate for the full extent of the damage rather than leaving items off, as in the Sun Prairie claim above.

That’s a common starting point, the Sun Prairie claim began as a $4,200 repair-only offer. Denials and lowball offers usually trace to incomplete documentation. We re-inspect, document properly, attend the re-inspection, and can file a supplemental claim. Insurance claims help →

Wisconsin policies typically allow 12 months from the storm event. After that window closes, damage that should have been covered becomes your cost. Unrepaired damage also compounds into decking rot that insurers often won’t cover, since it’s then treated as maintenance neglect. The sooner it’s documented, the better.

No. Every crew member who touches your Madison roof is a Buckshot employee. We’re the only Madison roofer with GAF Master Elite status, the same people who inspect and document your storm claim do the install, supervised by the same foreman, with our workmanship warranty in writing.
