The brand matters less than most homeowners expect, and less than the installer, the ventilation and the accessories. Within the mainstream architectural lines, the meaningful differences come down to impact rating, wind warranty terms, cold-weather flexibility and which manufacturer certifies your contractor.

GAF Timberline
GAF holds the largest share of the North American asphalt market, and Timberline HDZ is the line you will be quoted most often in Madison.
Its distinguishing feature is a wider nailing zone, which reduces the most common installation error we find on failed roofs, nails placed above or below the strip. GAF's WindProven limited wind warranty carries no maximum wind speed when the roof is installed with four qualifying GAF accessories by a certified contractor.
Timberline AS II is the Class 4 impact-rated version for hail exposure.
Owens Corning Duration
Owens Corning's Duration line uses a fabric strip through the nailing area, marketed as SureNail, which gives a similar tolerance benefit to GAF's wider zone.
Duration shingles are commonly specified for colour range, and Owens Corning's colour palette is genuinely broader than most. Duration Storm and Duration Flex are the impact-rated members of the family, with Flex using a polymer-modified asphalt that stays more flexible in cold.
CertainTeed Landmark
Landmark is the closest thing to a specification-grade default. It is a heavier shingle than the entry architectural products from either competitor, and its dimensional appearance reads slightly deeper on the roof.
Landmark IR is the Class 4 version. CertainTeed's credentialed-contractor warranty, SureStart PLUS, extends non-prorated coverage in a way comparable to the other manufacturers' top tiers.
Malarkey Legacy
Malarkey is the outlier worth knowing about in a freeze-thaw climate. Its shingles use polymer-modified asphalt incorporating recycled rubber and plastics, which keeps the mat more pliable at low temperature and more resistant to hail bruising.
Legacy carries a Class 4 impact rating as standard rather than as a separate upgrade product. Malarkey has thinner distribution in south-central Wisconsin than the big three, so lead times and colour availability can be tighter.
Atlas Pinnacle
Atlas Pinnacle Pristine is the value option that still competes on substance. Its notable feature is Scotchgard protection built into the granules, which suppresses the black algae streaking common on north-facing slopes.
Atlas sits below GAF and CertainTeed on installed volume here, which matters mainly for future colour matching if you ever need a partial repair.
Impact rating is the specification that matters in hail country
Class 4 is the top rating under UL 2218, awarded when a shingle survives a two-inch steel ball dropped twice on the same spot without cracking the mat.
South-central Wisconsin sits in a corridor that takes damaging hail most years, so this is not a theoretical upgrade. Many Wisconsin carriers offer a premium discount for a Class 4 roof, though the amount varies by carrier and is worth confirming with your agent before you pay for the upgrade.
A Class 4 shingle does not make a roof hail-proof. It raises the threshold at which bruising fractures the mat, which is often the difference between a claim and no claim.

Wind warranties, and what voids them
Every mainstream architectural shingle carries a limited wind warranty in the 110 to 130 mph range at standard install, with the higher tiers conditional on specific nailing patterns, starter strip at eaves and rakes, and manufacturer ridge cap.
Read the condition, not the number. The enhanced wind coverage on every brand depends on using that manufacturer's accessories throughout, which is exactly where a low bid saves money.

Cold weather changes how shingles behave
Asphalt stiffens as temperature drops, which affects both installation and hail performance.
Shingles installed in genuine cold do not self-seal until the following warm spell, which leaves tabs vulnerable to wind through the first winter. Hand-sealing at eaves, rakes and hips is the correct response, and polymer-modified products such as Malarkey Legacy and Owens Corning Duration Flex tolerate cold installation better than conventional asphalt.
This is a real argument for scheduling a replacement outside deep winter when the roof is not leaking. It is not an argument for living with an active leak until spring.
The installer changes outcomes more than the brand
Most premature asphalt failures we open up are installation failures, not manufacturing failures. Nails driven above the strip or overdriven through the mat. No starter course at the rakes. Ridge cap cut from field shingles. Ice-and-water membrane omitted at eaves and valleys. Attic ventilation left inadequate, which cooks the shingles from below and voids most manufacturer coverage.
Every manufacturer above gates its strongest warranty behind a certification tier, because they know this. GAF's Golden Pledge requires Master Elite standing and includes a factory inspection of the finished roof. The equivalent tiers at Owens Corning and CertainTeed work the same way.

What we recommend, and why
For most Madison-area homes we specify GAF Timberline HDZ with the full GAF accessory system, because the wider nailing zone reduces install risk, the accessory range is complete, and our Master Elite standing unlocks the Golden Pledge tier.
For homes that have already taken hail twice, or where the carrier confirms a Class 4 discount, we recommend stepping up to an impact-rated product and will quote Malarkey Legacy or the impact-rated line from whichever manufacturer you prefer.
For a rental, a flip, or a roof you expect to hand over inside a decade, Atlas Pinnacle is defensible and we will say so rather than upselling.
