The Silver Pledge covers both the roofing materials (shingles and qualifying accessories) and the contractor's workmanship for a defined period. Material coverage is provided by GAF; workmanship coverage is backed by your installing contractor. Always confirm current coverage periods directly with GAF, as terms can update.

The GAF Silver Pledge warranty covers both roofing materials and the contractor's workmanship, but only when a GAF-certified contractor installs the roof using the required system components and registers the warranty correctly. That last part is where most homeowners get tripped up.
If you're shopping for a new roof in Madison or anywhere in south-central Wisconsin, understanding exactly what this warranty does, what it doesn't do, and what can kill it before you ever file a claim is worth a few minutes of your time.
What the GAF Silver Pledge Warranty Actually Covers
The Silver Pledge is a step above the basic GAF shingle limited warranty. It has two main components.
Material coverage. GAF backs the shingles and qualifying accessories against manufacturing defects. If a shingle fails because of how it was made, GAF addresses the cost.
Workmanship coverage. This is the part that sets Silver Pledge apart. It covers errors in how the roof was installed. Bad flashing technique, improper nail patterns, incorrect starter strip placement, those kinds of installation mistakes. The workmanship piece is backed by your installing contractor, not GAF directly.
Coverage periods vary, and GAF updates its warranty terms periodically. Do not rely on a number you read in a blog post, including this one. Confirm the current coverage periods directly at gaf.com or ask your contractor to show you the current warranty document before you sign anything.
What "Misapplication Coverage" Means
This is a term GAF uses that confuses a lot of people. Misapplication coverage means that if the contractor installed the materials incorrectly, the warranty still provides a path to a remedy. Without it, you'd have to pursue the contractor yourself to recover anything from a botched install.
It doesn't mean every possible mistake is covered indefinitely. There are still conditions, exclusions, and a defined coverage window. But it's a real protection that a basic shingle warranty simply doesn't give you.
Does the Silver Pledge Cost the Homeowner Extra?
This comes up a lot. In most cases, the Silver Pledge warranty itself does not carry a separate line-item fee for the homeowner. What you're paying for is the certified installation. A GAF-certified contractor builds the cost of proper system components and warranty registration into the job. The warranty is a byproduct of doing the work correctly with the right materials.
That said, if a contractor is quoting you a noticeably lower price by skipping required GAF Roofing System components, you may not actually be getting a Silver Pledge, even if they say you are. More on that below.
How Silver Pledge Compares to the Standard Shingle Warranty and Golden Pledge
GAF offers several warranty tiers. Here's how they stack up in plain terms.
Standard GAF Shingle Limited Warranty. This is what you get by default when GAF shingles are installed. It covers manufacturing defects in the shingles themselves. It does not cover workmanship. Any certified or non-certified contractor can trigger this warranty just by using GAF shingles.
GAF Silver Pledge. Adds workmanship coverage on top of material coverage. Requires a GAF-certified contractor. Requires a full GAF Roofing System installation. Requires registration.
GAF Golden Pledge. The top tier. Longer coverage terms, more comprehensive workmanship protection, and it requires installation by a GAF Master Elite contractor, which is a higher certification level. Golden Pledge also typically involves a factory inspection of the completed roof. It's the most thorough warranty GAF offers.
If a contractor is quoting you a Silver Pledge but isn't certified, that's a red flag. If they're quoting a Golden Pledge but aren't Master Elite, that's simply not possible. Ask to see their certification before you agree to anything.

The Critical Catch: Only GAF-Certified Contractors Can Offer It
You cannot get a GAF Silver Pledge warranty from a contractor who isn't GAF-certified. GAF controls this at the registration level.
A non-certified contractor can buy and install GAF shingles. The shingles themselves may still carry the standard limited warranty. But the Silver Pledge, with its workmanship coverage, is locked behind contractor certification. GAF certifies contractors based on their licensing, insurance, and installation training. It's not just a marketing badge.
This matters in Wisconsin because after a major hail event, crews from out of state flood into markets like Madison and Dane County. Some are good. Some aren't certified for anything, and they know most homeowners won't check. You could end up with GAF shingles on your roof and no Silver Pledge warranty, even if the contractor told you otherwise.
Always verify certification at gaf.com before you sign a contract.
What Voids a GAF Silver Pledge Warranty
Getting the warranty is one thing. Keeping it valid is another. Here are the most common ways a Silver Pledge gets voided.
Improper attic ventilation. This is the biggest one in Wisconsin. GAF requires that the ventilation system meets specific intake-to-exhaust ratios. Ice dams, premature shingle aging, and decking rot are often traced back to poor ventilation. If your attic runs too hot in summer or too cold and damp in winter, it shortens shingle life and can void the warranty. A thorough contractor checks this before they ever put a shingle on.
Layover installations. Installing new shingles over existing shingles without a full tear-off may void the warranty depending on the specific conditions. GAF has rules about this. If a contractor is pushing a layover to save money, ask them to show you in writing that the warranty remains valid.
Non-GAF components when a full GAF Roofing System is required. The Silver Pledge typically requires specific GAF-branded components, not just the shingles. Starter strips, ridge cap, underlayment, and ice-and-water shield may all need to be GAF products. A contractor who substitutes a cheaper non-GAF underlayment to pad their margin can blow your warranty without you knowing.
Failure to register. The warranty has to be registered with GAF after installation. This is the contractor's responsibility, but you're the one who suffers if it doesn't happen. We've re-registered warranties for homeowners who had no idea their coverage had lapsed because the original contractor never completed the paperwork. Ask for written confirmation of registration before the crew leaves your driveway.
Unauthorized repairs or modifications. If someone other than a GAF-certified contractor later works on the roof and causes damage, that work can void the warranty on the affected area.
What Happens If Your Contractor Goes Out of Business?
This is a question homeowners don't ask often enough. Workmanship coverage under the Silver Pledge is tied to the installing contractor. If that company closes, the workmanship portion of your coverage becomes very difficult, often impossible, to enforce. GAF backs the materials, but the contractor backs the labor.
It's one of the strongest arguments for choosing an established local contractor rather than the lowest bidder or a storm-chasing crew that rolls in after a hail event and rolls out six months later. A company that has been in business for 47 years is a fundamentally different risk than one that opened last spring.

How to Register and Transfer the Warranty
After installation, your contractor should register the warranty with GAF on your behalf. You should receive a confirmation, by email or mail, with your warranty number. Keep this with your other home records.
If you're selling your home, the Silver Pledge is transferable to the new owner. There is typically a transfer fee and a window of time after the sale during which the transfer must be completed. Miss that window and the new owner may lose the workmanship coverage. Check the current GAF terms for exact details, as the fee and timeline can change.
If you're buying a home and the seller claims there's a GAF warranty on the roof, ask for the warranty number and verify it with GAF directly. Don't take the seller's word for it.
What a GAF Warranty Claim Actually Looks Like
Homeowners sometimes picture a warranty claim as a quick phone call that ends with a check. The reality is a bit more involved.
You'll typically need to contact GAF (or your contractor, depending on whether it's a material or workmanship issue) and document the problem. That means photos, your warranty registration number, and a description of what failed and when. GAF or the contractor may send someone to inspect the roof before approving any remedy. The timeline depends on the nature of the claim, the contractor's responsiveness, and GAF's review process.
Material claims go through GAF. Workmanship claims go through your contractor first. If your contractor is unresponsive or no longer in business, a workmanship claim gets much harder. This is why documentation at installation time matters so much, and why who you hire in the first place matters even more.
How to Check If Your Roof Already Has a Silver Pledge
If you're not sure whether your current roof is covered, start here.
- Look for paperwork from when the roof was installed. The warranty confirmation should have a registration number.
- Contact the original installing contractor and ask them to pull the registration.
- Contact GAF directly with your property address. They can often look up whether a warranty was registered.
- Have a GAF-certified roofing contractor inspect the roof. They can identify the shingle line, check installation quality, and help you research the warranty status.
If you bought a home and the previous owner didn't pass along roofing records, this is worth doing before the next hail season. Wisconsin storms don't wait for you to get organized.

Why Warranty Coverage Matters After a Wisconsin Storm
A warranty and an insurance claim are not the same thing. If a hailstorm damages your roof, that's an insurance matter, not a warranty claim. The warranty covers defects and workmanship errors. Storm damage is a separate process entirely.
That said, a properly installed, registered, warranty-backed roof can matter when you file a storm claim. In our experience, a documented certified installation gives adjusters less room to question the pre-storm condition of the roof. It's a cleaner starting point than a roof with no paper trail and unknown installation history.
If you've had recent storm damage and aren't sure about your roof's condition or warranty status, we can help with both. We meet homeowners and their adjusters on-site to document damage and make sure nothing gets missed. Learn more about our storm damage restoration work and what that process looks like.
A GAF Silver Pledge warranty is genuinely valuable protection, but only if it's done right. The right shingles, the right system components, a certified contractor, proper ventilation, and a registered warranty. Skip any one of those steps and the coverage you thought you had may not be there when you need it.
