In the valley, moisture is the quiet enemy

Mazomanie is a small historic railroad village in western Dane County, on the floor of the Black Earth Creek valley northwest of Madison. Down here, what wears out a roof is often not a storm at all.

    • A local crew that knows the valley. A short drive from our Madison shop, and here for the warranty.
    • Built for the humid valley floor. Moss, algae and attic moisture, on top of hail and valley wind.
    • GAF Master Elite, top 2% of US roofers. The only tier that can register the GAF Golden Pledge warranty.
    • We handle the insurance claim. We document the damage, meet your adjuster, and you typically pay only your deductible.
    • Our own crews, family-owned since 1979. No subcontractors, and a free written inspection with photos.

Valley floorWhat a damp roof needs

What a Mazomanie valley-floor roof really contends with

A roof in a humid, shaded valley faces a different set of problems from one on open ground. These are the things we plan around here.

    Moss on shaded slopes

North-facing and tree-covered slopes stay damp and grow moss that lifts shingle edges and traps water, the single most common valley-floor roof problem.

    Algae streaking

Humid air leaves the dark streaks that spread across shingles. Mostly cosmetic at first, but a sign the roof stays wet, and a reason to consider algae-resistant shingles at replacement.

    Attic ventilation

In damp valley air, an attic that cannot breathe builds moisture under the deck, which shortens shingle life and can grow mold on the sheathing. Balanced ventilation is the fix.

    Drainage & gutters

Leaves and debris off heavy tree cover clog valleys and gutters, so water backs up instead of leaving the roof. Clean lines and proper drip edge keep it moving.

    Historic-home detail

The older homes near downtown have steeper roofs, dormers and aging decking that need careful flashing and a profile that suits the village’s character.

    Storm on top of damp

The valley still gets summer hail and wind, which hit hardest on a roof already softened by trapped moisture, so we read both when we inspect.

    What goes wrongMazomanie roof failure

What actually wears out a Mazomanie roof

Moss & algaeHumid, shaded valley slopes grow moss that lifts shingle edges and holds moisture against the roof.
Trapped attic moisturePoor ventilation in damp air builds condensation under the deck, aging shingles and rotting sheathing.
Clogged valleysDebris off heavy tree cover backs water up in the valleys and gutters instead of letting it drain away.
Summer hailLower Wisconsin valley thunderstorms drop the hail that strips granules and dents flashing and vents.
Aging historic roofsOlder downtown homes with steep roofs and old decking often run their roofs well past their prime.
Ice damsWinter melt refreezes at the eaves of an under-ventilated attic and forces water under the shingles.

When the big storms came through the Madison-area in April 2026, I immediately started looking for a reputable roofer—who also understood the importance of weather-resistant materials that can withstand hail and wind. It didn’t take me long to find Brad from BCG. We had damage that needed to be repaired before the next round of storms came through later that day and Brad had a crew out within hours. Our neighbors also had damage, and when their roofing company didn’t show up, Brad and his crew also took on fixing their damage on the spot. The contracting process was done over email and we were able to clearly understand all of the options available to us. On the day of install, the crew was efficient and fast with their work. But also, mistakes can happen. And what matters to us is not that there’s perfection (because that’s not realistic), but how a contractor deals with a mistake. As they were taking down the tarps when they were finished with the roof, one of our lights next to the garage broke. Brad helped find a replacement online and had it shipped directly to our house! Such great service! All in all, we were very happy with Brad and the service we received from him and BCG. We’ve since recommended their services to several of our friends and neighbors who also had storm damage. While I hope we won’t have to do that again for a long time, we would work with BCG again in a heartbeat!

I am extremely pleased with the service Matt Walmer from Buckshot General Contracting (BGC) provided for me during the hailstorm damage in Madison in April. I had just switched insurance companies one year ago and was worried about how much they would cover. Matt assured me everything would be taken care of and had nothing to worry about. True to his word he immediately answered phone calls during off hours even when he was with daughter at volleyball and answering texts in seconds Matt met up with assessor and arrived 20 minutes early. During roof replacement he stopped in 3 times to check the progress and next day he came back to do a walk around to make sure the cleanup was to his standards. I have been so blessed to work with Matt at BGC as my contractor as everything went so smoothly. No problems with my insurance company and I was the first one on my block to get my roof done. I also was telling Matt about some of my neighbors having problems with their insurance and he was willing to look at their paperwork and giving them advice on how to deal with them. I can proudly say I announced to them how good Matt was and gave them his card. Thank you so much Matt for your excellent service and being a great representative for Buckshot General Contracting. These days days it’s hard to find a business that is 100% committed to making sure the customer is their #1 concern. Going to be doing more work and sticking with them as I know it will be top quality.

We contacted BGC after storm damage and had them completely re-roof and re-side our house, garage, and shed. The entire process was incredibly smooth from start to finish. They were easy to work with, handled all the details, and made what could have been a stressful situation completely worry-free. Our contact, Jayce Kirkland, was outstanding. His professionalism, communication, and courteous demeanor were truly a breath of fresh air. He took care of everything for us and made sure the project stayed on track every step of the way. We couldn’t be happier with the experience and have and would highly recommend BGC to anyone needing roofing or siding work!

    FAQMazomanie roofing

    Mazomanie roofing questions, answered straight

Mossy valley roof, an older downtown home, or storm damage? Call and talk it through with a real person, no call center.

    Call (608) 909-9109
Q.01 Why do Mazomanie roofs grow so much moss and algae?

Mazomanie sits on the low, humid floor of the Black Earth Creek valley, with heavy tree cover and slow-drying shade. That moisture is ideal for algae streaking and moss, especially on north-facing slopes. Moss that lifts shingle edges traps water and shortens a roof’s life, so we check for it and can recommend cleaning, treatment or algae-resistant shingles at replacement.

Q.02 Do you roof the older brick-era homes near downtown?

Yes. Mazomanie’s historic railroad-village core has older homes with steeper roofs, dormers and aging decking that need careful flashing and a profile that suits the home. We plan the material, ventilation and any permit around the property before the tear-off, and match the new roof to the home’s character.

Q.03 Does the damp valley air affect roof ventilation?

It does. In humid valley air, poor attic ventilation lets moisture build under the roof deck, which shortens shingle life and can grow mold on the sheathing. Balanced intake and exhaust keeps the attic dry and near outdoor temperature, which matters even more here than on a breezy hilltop lot.

Q.04 Does Mazomanie get hail and storm damage too?

Yes. The lower Wisconsin River valley sees the same summer thunderstorms as the rest of the area, and the Madison area records among the highest numbers of hail reports in the state. Hail strips granules and dents flashing and vents, and valley winds lift shingles. A free photo inspection tells you whether it is worth a claim.

Q.05 Are you local to Mazomanie, or do you travel here?

Mazomanie is inside our Dane County service area. Our shop is on Madison’s north side, a short drive east, and we work the western Dane County valley towns every week. Call (608) 909-9109 for a free inspection and we will confirm scheduling for your address.
