On a Cross Plains lotWhat we check

What we look at on a wooded, rural Cross Plains roof

Village home or a house on acreage, a Cross Plains inspection covers the things a tree-lined, hail-exposed lot actually does to a roof.

Hail bruising across the field of the roof, the soft spots and knocked-off granules that a ground-level look almost always misses.
Wind-lifted and torn shingles, especially along ridges and edges where valley winds get under the tabs.
Limb strikes and overhanging branches, the impact marks and the trees that will keep dropping debris and shade onto the roof.
Moss and algae on shaded slopes, which lift shingle edges and hold moisture on north-facing and tree-covered roofs.
Ice-dam signs at the eaves, the staining and worn edges that show the attic is melting snow unevenly in winter.
The outbuildings too, detached garages, sheds and pole buildings quoted in the same visit if you want them looked at.
What goes wrongCross Plains roof failure

What actually wears out a Cross Plains roof

Frequent hailThe Madison area sees some of Wisconsin’s highest hail exposure, and the ice strips granules and dents flashing and vents.
Valley windStraight-line winds funnel through the Black Earth Creek valley and off the open ground, lifting and tearing shingles.
Falling limbsHeavy tree cover over Cross Plains roofs means branch strikes and steady debris that wear a roof down.
Moss & algaeShaded, north-facing slopes hold moisture and grow moss that lifts shingle edges and traps water.
Ice damsWinter melt refreezes at the eaves of an under-ventilated attic and pushes water back under the shingles.
Storm chasersOut-of-state crews collect the insurance check and leave, so the warranty is only as good as who is still here.

    How we buildLayer by layer

Built for Wisconsin, layer by layer

A roof is a system, not just shingles. Every Cross Plains roof we install is built to handle ice dams, wind and hail, from the deck up.

Decking inspected on bare wood before anything goes back on, so soft spots get replaced.
Ice & water shield at eaves and valleys, the local ice-dam defense.
GAF Timberline HDZ & UHDZ with StainGuard algae resistance and LayerLock high-wind nailing.
Camelot II available for a designer slate look.
Synthetic underlayment, ridge cap, drip edge and new pipe-boot flashing throughout.
Balanced attic ventilation so heat and moisture do not cook the roof from below.
    Repair or replaceThe honest answer

    Repair it or replace it?

In Cross Plains the honest call usually comes down to storm damage and age, meaning how hard the last hail or wind hit, and how much life the shingles had left.

What we find on your Cross Plains roofWhat we usually recommend
A few wind-lifted shingles or one limb-strike spotTargeted repair
Light, scattered hail marks on a fairly new roofTargeted repair
Moss or algae on shaded slopes, shingles still soundClean or treat
Widespread hail bruising documented for a claimInsurance replacement
Shingles past 18 to 22 years, curling or granule-bareFull replacement
Repeat ice-dam leaks and an under-ventilated atticReplacement + ventilation

The free inspection includes the attic, eaves and any outbuildings you want looked at, and you get the answer in writing with photos before deciding anything.

When the big storms came through the Madison-area in April 2026, I immediately started looking for a reputable roofer—who also understood the importance of weather-resistant materials that can withstand hail and wind. It didn’t take me long to find Brad from BCG. We had damage that needed to be repaired before the next round of storms came through later that day and Brad had a crew out within hours. Our neighbors also had damage, and when their roofing company didn’t show up, Brad and his crew also took on fixing their damage on the spot. The contracting process was done over email and we were able to clearly understand all of the options available to us. On the day of install, the crew was efficient and fast with their work. But also, mistakes can happen. And what matters to us is not that there’s perfection (because that’s not realistic), but how a contractor deals with a mistake. As they were taking down the tarps when they were finished with the roof, one of our lights next to the garage broke. Brad helped find a replacement online and had it shipped directly to our house! Such great service! All in all, we were very happy with Brad and the service we received from him and BCG. We’ve since recommended their services to several of our friends and neighbors who also had storm damage. While I hope we won’t have to do that again for a long time, we would work with BCG again in a heartbeat!

I am extremely pleased with the service Matt Walmer from Buckshot General Contracting (BGC) provided for me during the hailstorm damage in Madison in April. I had just switched insurance companies one year ago and was worried about how much they would cover. Matt assured me everything would be taken care of and had nothing to worry about. True to his word he immediately answered phone calls during off hours even when he was with daughter at volleyball and answering texts in seconds Matt met up with assessor and arrived 20 minutes early. During roof replacement he stopped in 3 times to check the progress and next day he came back to do a walk around to make sure the cleanup was to his standards. I have been so blessed to work with Matt at BGC as my contractor as everything went so smoothly. No problems with my insurance company and I was the first one on my block to get my roof done. I also was telling Matt about some of my neighbors having problems with their insurance and he was willing to look at their paperwork and giving them advice on how to deal with them. I can proudly say I announced to them how good Matt was and gave them his card. Thank you so much Matt for your excellent service and being a great representative for Buckshot General Contracting. These days days it’s hard to find a business that is 100% committed to making sure the customer is their #1 concern. Going to be doing more work and sticking with them as I know it will be top quality.

We contacted BGC after storm damage and had them completely re-roof and re-side our house, garage, and shed. The entire process was incredibly smooth from start to finish. They were easy to work with, handled all the details, and made what could have been a stressful situation completely worry-free. Our contact, Jayce Kirkland, was outstanding. His professionalism, communication, and courteous demeanor were truly a breath of fresh air. He took care of everything for us and made sure the project stayed on track every step of the way. We couldn’t be happier with the experience and have and would highly recommend BGC to anyone needing roofing or siding work!

    FAQCross Plains roofing

Cross Plains roofing questions, answered straight

Storm just came through, or a rural roof and outbuildings due for a look? Call and talk it through with a real person, no call center.

    Call (608) 909-9109
Q.01 Are you actually local to Cross Plains?

Yes. Our shop is on Madison’s north side, a short drive from Cross Plains, and we work across Dane County every week. Unlike the out-of-state crews that show up after a storm and leave, we are a Wisconsin contractor that will still be here for the warranty. Call (608) 909-9109 for a free inspection.

Q.02 Why does Cross Plains get so much hail?

The Madison area records among the highest numbers of hail reports in Wisconsin, and Cross Plains sits in that zone. Hail strips granules off shingles and dents flashing, vents and gutters. The damage is often not obvious from the ground, so a free photo inspection tells you whether it is worth an insurance claim.

Q.03 Do you roof rural homes and outbuildings?

Yes. Many Cross Plains properties sit on rural or wooded lots with detached garages, pole buildings and sheds alongside the house. We roof the home and can quote the outbuildings in the same visit, and we plan access for steeper hillside and tree-lined lots.

Q.04 My shaded roof has green streaks. Is that a problem?

Cross Plains has a lot of tree cover, and shaded or north-facing roofs hold moisture and grow algae and moss. Streaking is mostly cosmetic at first, but moss that lifts shingle edges traps water and shortens the roof’s life. We assess whether it needs cleaning, algae-resistant shingles at replacement, or nothing yet.

Q.05 Do valley storms cause wind damage here?

They can. Straight-line winds funnel through the Black Earth Creek valley and across the open ground west of Madison, lifting shingles and bringing down limbs. After a windy storm we document the damage with photos and handle the insurance side so a repair or replacement is straightforward.
