    —  What Hail Actually Does

    SEC 01 / 07

The damage you can't see is the expensive one.

Hailstones as small as one inch crack the granules on an asphalt shingle, exposing the fiberglass mat underneath. The granule layer is what protects the shingle from UV. Once it's fractured, here's what happens next:

    • Granules fracture on impact, often invisible from the ground
    • The exposed mat degrades under UV over the next two to three seasons
    • Bruised spots soften, then crack, letting water reach the decking
    • By the time a ceiling stain appears, decking rot has already started

    —  Repair or Replace

    SEC 02 / 07

The 30% rule decides repair vs replacement.

We assess every hail impact across field shingles, hip and ridge caps, valley flashing, and penetrations, then the extent of functional damage decides the right path. We recommend the smaller fix when it genuinely holds.

    Under the threshold

    Targeted repair

Fewer than 30% of shingles show functional damageDamage is isolated to one slope or sectionWe document and repair the affected areas with color-matched materialsSurrounding shingles and flashing checked so it doesn't spread

    —  How to Spot It

    SEC 03 / 07

6 signs of hail damage, before you climb anything.

You can check most of these from the ground or your gutters. If you spot even one after a storm, get a documented inspection before the 12-month window closes.

Run your hand inside the gutter. Heavy dark, sand-like deposits mean the shingle surface is fracturing, accelerating UV breakdown of the mat.

Circular dents on gutters, downspout elbows, aluminum fascia, and vents almost always mean the shingles above took similar impacts.

Visible with binoculars: lifted tab edges, cracked faces, or bare decking patches that let water in during the next rain.

Dark drywall staining or wet attic insulation confirms active intrusion, the damage has already been compounding. Urgent.

Around chimneys, skylights, and vents, hail impact and thermal shock crack the caulk, running water behind the flashing.

Dented soffit panels open ventilation gaps, and compromise the attic ventilation your roof warranty depends on.

    —  Know Your Coverage

    SEC 05 / 07

What you actually pay depends on your policy.

Two policy types decide your out-of-pocket cost on a hail claim. We review your policy summary during the inspection and explain what yours means before you file.

    Replacement Cost Value

    RCV, the better case

Covers the full replacement cost minus your deductible. For most hail claims this means you pay only your deductible and we bill the insurer for the rest. RCV is what makes "a new roof for your deductible" possible.

    Storm just hit?

    Answered 24/7 · Free inspection

Check for granules in your gutters, circular dents on soft metals (gutters, downspouts, vents), and lifted or cracked shingles. Much hail damage is invisible from the ground, though, impact bruising softens the shingle mat without an obvious mark. A free documented inspection is the only reliable way to know. It comes down to how widespread the functional damage is. If fewer than 30% of shingles are functionally damaged and it’s isolated, we can often repair. When impact is widespread, common after a large-cell storm, full replacement is the correct and insurance-covered solution. We document the extent and recommend the smaller fix when it genuinely holds. See the 30% rule →

Most standard Wisconsin policies cover hail damage. RCV policies pay full replacement minus your deductible; ACV policies factor in depreciation by roof age. We review your policy summary during the inspection and explain what your specific coverage means before you file.

Probably not. Wisconsin policies typically allow 12 months from the storm event to file, and hail damage compounds quietly over two to three seasons, so damage from a storm earlier this year is often still claimable. But the window does close, and once it does the cost is yours. Get it inspected now.

Yes. Hail falls across a whole area, so if homes near you are being approved for storm claims, the same storm very likely hit your roof too. The damage may not be visible from your yard. A free inspection tells you whether you have a claim before your filing window runs out.

Denials usually happen when documentation was incomplete or the damage wasn’t clearly tied to a specific storm. Our inspection report and adjuster process is built to prevent that with measurable, dated documentation. If you were denied, we can re-inspect and help you understand re-inspection or supplemental claim options.
